Episode one - the classics.
It's 50 years since Merckx burst onto the scene (or something) so Belgium is celebrating their own greatest ever.
They don't mind a hagiography or two (even with the subject present in the room), but it's good fun.
Boonen & Planckaert make heavy appearances in this one, and so does Frank Vandebroecke (in montage form).
I don't think many outside of Belgium quite appreciate how much of a impact Frank seems to have had on them. It's a bit strange.
Some good footage of Merckx beasting some people at football too.

Cheers Rick. I've got a 12 hour train journey tomorrow so I'll watch it then.
Saw Merckx's statue at the top of the Stockeau last weekend. It's crap.
VDB is a weird one. He's more than a wasted talent here, more like a martyr to the worst of cycling. Of course none of it was poor Frank's fault"In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Thanks Rick, really enjoyed that. Didn't realise the Ronde used to finish outside our little station!
How much would FF love those guys in the bar in Brakel too? Boonen is rubbish because he only wins by 30s or a minute or (spit) in a sprint. De Ronde is a crit now. Awesome.
If anybody comes to east Flanders for a race or the six or whatever, you should deffo go to Brakel. They breath cycling there. The roundabout in the middle of the village has a big pile of bikes as a monument in rainbow bands. The locals all wear casquettes to do the garden and check out every cyckist that comes past. Its so odd but so cool."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous at not being able to read the press, watch the films and peruse the articles that come from over there.Contador is the Greatest0 -
