OT: Formal shoes

You guys seem to be a good resource for this topic.
I have a pair of formal shoes that have shrunk (probably due to the silicone in Parade Gloss that was used on them for years before knowing better). I therefore need to replace them and want some good quality shoes for around £100. Don't have to wear them very often so not worth spending much more, but I do want better than standard cheap offerings. Loakes and Barkers seem to start around £150 for their non-UK made offerings (unless discounted) so even these are slightly above what I want to pay.
Looking for Oxfords or Gibsons with toe cap in black (91/2 G)
Been on Herring Shoes and found these http://www.herringshoes.co.uk/product-info.php?&brandid=2&shoeid=5063 but not sure on quality.
Any suggestions?

You can travel to the factory shops in Northampton if you want to get a bargain. I've heard of people getting them a lot cheaper at the factory outlets. Anyone here got experience of this?Shand Skinnymalinky

I'd second this. My parents lived nearby and it was considered a good day out traipsing around factory shops. Some good bargains to be had. I've used these too - sometimes some good stuff crops up

These guys sometimes have some good deals on Loakes

Not sure if they deliver - but worth a buzz if you know what you want0 -
Pop down to your local TKMaxx: just picked up a pair of Bakers for £80.
Really nicely made, wide by default and comfortable shoes, I hope they will last!0 -
Don't know Bakers - but if they are Barkers that is a great deal; get quarter heels put on soon and get resoled before you need to and they will last for years and years. And they will get more and more comfy whilst remaining smart looking0

I just buy all my shoes from Jones. Cost about 74-100 per pair (in the sales) and are all going strong, subject to a few resoles (mind you they rarely go outside so don't see horrific weather as I keep them at work as I cycle in)
Loake I've tried but they always seem extremely stiff and could take your heels down!
Barker are my next port of call, but also worth considering Shipton and Heneage. I have a pair of their loafers which are v smart.0 -

Not sure about gibsons though. Half brogue, wholecut or oxford for me.
Russell and Bromley worth a look. All half made in italy and soon to relocate manufacturing to Northamptonshire0 -

Russel and Bromley absolutely destroy my feet. They seem weirdly shaped and very very stiff - aimed at cutting into everything.
Loakes are better but my pair, though they look very good even after 2 years they took about a year of breaking in with a lot of blood.
Hence me likely to head for churches or cheaneys. Might have a look at the loake 1880 for that reason......0 -
Try calf leather?
I don't want to have to ruin my feet to get my shoes comfy, not least at 150 per pair!0 -
The most comfortable shoes that I have ever owned by far, including Churches.
Like slipping on a pair of your favourite slippers straight out of the box.

Don't last well in foul weather unfortunately. May try their waterproof range next. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
If you are in London then Discount Shoe Sales on Strutton Ground in Westminster is worth a look. Useful discount on retail and, despite the depressing sounding name is actually a proper old school shoe shop (ie counter with racks of shoes on one side, chairs on the other side, not much else. My Loakes (Shoemaker range; Oban half brogues - made in UK) were about £120 there irrc down from £155.Faster than a tent.......0

It's probably massive faux pas in the shoe world but Charles Tyrwhitt send me enough vouchers that I just use them and there is one every 50 feet around here.0

I got some Loakes from Herringshoes, around £140 if memory serves. I need to get the sole repaired now as I wear through shoes in a particular spot, but that's taken 4 years to happen and they're absolutely a cut above the £100 pair of Jones shoes I bought before. Still look as new but just more comfy now.0

I'm hoping you mean Barkers.
Bakers make dog food out of among other things, tripe. Perhaps they do footwear as a sideline?0 -
I'd second looking out for the Jones sale - can get good formal shoes for under £100 there.
Problem is that most of the classic stuff (Loake Barkers never mind Cheaney or Church) doesn't often get all the way to £100 in the sales - mainly because it doesn't suffer from the whims of fashion. I like a bargain and wouldn't pay full price for Cheaney or Church but I reckon £200 in the sale is more realistic for them.0 -
Thanks everyone, good info.
Unfortunately due to a washing machine failure at the weekend a couple of months budget for thing 'I want' has been spent on things the family/wife 'needs'.
Will post back when I eventually get round to buyingCoach H. (Dont ask me for training advice - 'It's not about the bike')0 -
After praising Jones, my half brogues have just split.
That said they do have some Barkers in my size and on sale but no luxuries permitted for the foreseeable. Have gone back to my Oxfords, which clearly desperately need a polish.0 -

Oxfords also have a split in them. Great. BOYCOTT JONES!0
