What would be a good budget work stand and toolkit?

    +1 for the Lidl workstand.

If you're running shimano, there are a few basic tool kits out there (like the jobsworth kit currently on sale at Planet X) that are good enough for most jobs. Don't scrimp on cable cutters, the £5 ones you'll see on ebay are pretty useless after a few cuts. FWIW, I've been using a pair of BBB cable cutters (cost about £20) for the past three years and they still cut cleanly.

If only Lidl stocked one when I needed a replacement.

    So, I bought this:

    £28 on fleabay.

I bought a pair of 'self sharpening' Shimano cable cutters for £38, 18 years ago, still A1, like this but much cheaper now we have ebay:

Alen keys are easy to get holf of. Don't get dirt cheap one's as they will wear out/wear your bolts out. I had a surplus so ground off the 'L' bit and used loctite to superglue them into 1/4" drive sockets. You can get Alen key and Hex on handles, very useful:
