I have taken a pair of brand new Schwalbe Racing Ralph Performance 700 x 33c off my new bike as I've replaced them with the more road-friendly Marathon Plus.

The RR tyres are wire bead and I cannot find any RR wire bead tyres being sold, only folding ones, therefore I am assuming the wire bead version is some sort of OEM that comes already fitted to new bikes.

The weight of the wire bead tyres is 382 grams for one and 398 grams for the other.

Are these wire bead tyres valid as a decent CX tyre or are they just a cheap and cheerful version of the proper thing?

are you sure it's wire? only two versions of CX Racing Ralphs listed the evo at 320g and the folding performance at 380g.

the older versions of Racing Ralphs, ie old molds with wire beed etc are Rapid Robs at a 480g

if it is some OEM special weights within normal, does it have any markings as to compound?

Messaged Schwalbe directly this morning and got a reply back as follows (top marks to Schwalbe customer services!):

Thank you for your message. The Racing Ralph tire in size 33-600 (700x33C) is only produced as a folding tire with an aramid core for the aftermarket.
Indeed the version with the wire you have, is a special version for the OEM's.

It is a Performance Line tire with the same characteristics like the after market version. The compound is the Dual Compound.

We hope we could help you with this information.

  • ...I think the Grey Performance line logo, is OEM, as seen on a quite a few Cubes etc.

I have found previous MTB ones heavier with harder compounds. However there are perfectly usable.
