What brakes for under £80

Hi all
Looking for some hydraulics for a friend, it's his first set to move on from mechanicals.
Any recommendations?

Shimano Deore
£76 a set from CRC but may find cheaper elsewhere- just as good as higher end shimano stuff. Wont get better for the money.

Deores are superb, but if you can hold out a bit Ribble have a 10% off sale on fairly frequently for whatever reason. I'd suggest waiting until then and buying SLXs as they're £86 when not discounted and hence £77 in the sale. You get a slightly nicer lever feel, slightly smoother lever action and a touch more power and tool-free reach adjustment (though I've never found this particularly useful).

Slx brakes are on offer on merlin for 89 so would say have a look around on the various sites to see what's on offer.

SLX brakes are barely any different to Deore. They had an extremely lever adjuster I never used. Power, feel and control is identical. I wouldn't spend the extra again.

Perhaps I ended up with a dodgy set of Deores then; mine had an ever so slightly wooden feel about them. Both of my sets of SLXs have felt slightly smoother. If you fancy spending the extra for XT you can get a further pointless adjustment - free stroke.
