I see that Giant have announced the release of the 2016 Defy 1. I was surprised as I was expecting it to be a disc model as per the article below.

You're looking at the wrong bike. The disc model is called the 'Defy Disc'.

I think the defy 1 released in Australia is disc as standard, i was expecting that too for the UK version until it was released.
