Multiple maps on a Garmin 1000, can it be done?

Afternoon all,
I received this Garmin 1000 for my birthday, and have been slowly getting to grips with it.
After reading DC rainmakers guide on how to download free maps, I bought an SD card, and chose some tiles from the UK map.
Copied these on, and disabled the other maps, enabled this one, and it worked a treat.
However, I then realised that due to the size of the card, I may as well just download the whole of the UK, and as I am off to Spain next month, also wanted to download a chunk of Spain to help with rides whilst there.
The instructions for the map installation said to create a Garmin folder on the route of the SD card, and then extract the gmapsupp file straight into this folder.
So what I did was initially rename the new gmapsupp (One for the whole of the UK, and one for Part of Spain) to names that would make sense, ie Entire UK, Southern Spain.
Dropped them in alongside the gmapsupp file on the SD card, and then powered up the unit.
Went to the map selection part, but no further options appeared.
So I though perhaps it can only have one file in there at anytime, and it has to be called gmapsupp - so I deleted the old one from the SD card, renamed the entire UK one to gmapsupp, thus replacing the partial UK maps, with what should be complete UK maps.
Now when I go to browse maps this is what I see:
My current map setup on the Garmin is:
Disabled - INTL Standard Basemap, NR
Disabled - Garmin Cycle Map EU 2015.10
Enabled - OpenfietsmapLite (GBR...09-08-2015)
Disabled - Edge DEM Map EU 2014.10
Disabled - Garmin Geocode Map EU 2015.10
And this is what I see on the actual garmin file structure on the device rather than the SD - can't see anything on the SD itself (Aside from the gmapsupp file in the Garmin folder), so assume it copies\migrates something over to the Garmin itself?:
So this is in the Garmin folder on the 1000.
I am assuming it is the Disc Image File (That all have .sum file partners) types that are the relevant maps.
I see 5, as follows:
gmapbmap - 17.06.2010 - 5898kb
gmapdem - 02.03.2014 - 1690688kb
gmapgc - 15.04.2015 - 1645760kb
gmapprom - 16.04.2015 - 2567872kb
gmaptz - 21.08.2015 - 574kb
Common sense tells me that these all relate in one way or another to the maps I can see on the device.
Should I be removing some to reduce the confusion/options?
Presumably I only need one or two maps at most really.
Also, does anyone know why it does not seem to have picked up the entire UK map instead of the partial one?
What confuses me is that on the device it has a datestamp of 09.08.2015, which I am pretty sure is when I copied over the original one, but the time stamp on gmaptz (Assuming that is the same file?) is 21.08.2015, which would tie in with when I put the entire map on there.
But it's only 574kb, so does that mean it is 'running' off the SD,
The gmapsupp file on the SD card is just under 600mb.
So I guess after a long rambling post my main questions are:
Why is it apparently not picking up the entire map that I downloaded recently, or is it doing so, but the name and date are just cached on the actual display?
Should I be able to have multiple free maps on there, ie one for the UK, one for Spain, Italy and France if I so desired?
If so, is there a naming convention I would need to stick to?
If not, do they need to be named as a gmapsupp.discimagefile?
Sorry if these are dumbass questions, but navigation wise all I have ever used before is the breadcrumb trails, which if, like me you never used turn directions, were a piece of cake.
Cheers
Dan

You should be able to have multiple maps on the 1000. I don't have one so I don't know about the pre installed files. Why did you download maps? The 1000 comes with maps of Europe built in. Were those lacking in some way?
The map files you add yourself do not have to be named gmapsupp.img
They can have different file names and therefore you can have multiple maps. With my 800 I just name the files something sensible .img and copy them into the /Garmin folder on the SD card in the device. One issue you could have is that the internal map name of the ones you downloaded is the same. The maps internal name (which is chosen during the map creation process) is nothing to do with the file name. The Garmin will display the internal map name on the map list.
I am guessing that:
gmapbmap = Garmin base map
gmapdem = Garmin DEM map (terrain elevation)
gmapgc = Geocode
gmapprom =Garmin Cycle map EU
If no one here can help try the Edge 1000 section of the Garmin forums.0 -
Did it not come with them all on? I though the 1000 came with Europe already on the device.0

Oh balls, I could have sworn I read on one of the many reviews I read that the maps that came on the 1000 were not up to a huge amount, and that it was still advantageous to download the free maps from Garmin.
Is that not the case then, and the stock maps will see me through the whole of Europe, then I have clearly been wasting my time!Felt F70 05 (Turbo)

the openfliets maps are better though.
you can probably just re enable the europe stuff though. on my 800 I have whole of UK and Mallorca, as two separate files, done by following DCrainmaker guide. somehow when I get to Mallorca and fire up the garmin it all just works.Bianchi Infinito CV
