Hi all. Im adjusting to life back in england and i know cycling through winter my cervelo s5 will nit be able to handle it as dirt and crap gets dragged through the narrow clearance on the best of days and winter will just wreck it.
What do you all ride through winter? I have a carbon 29er but its always hung up in the bike room and i cant really get on with it. I want to get another ride bike for winter duties.
Secondhand would be best as it will get ridden in all weathers. No need for di2 as i have that on the cervelo.
Budget £1500 ish?
Cheers guys

How about this for a leftfield choice:

Great price for this
www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CBRTD90CMP/planet-x-rtd-90-comp-disc-road-bike £1,599.99
or

What he said. Disc wheels, big tyre clearance,22 speed, full mudguards and rack mounts if need.
Don't think I could speed £1500 on a winter bike. I am using a defy 2 for winter and lack of full mudguards is a PITA.0 -
Why not consider a cyclocross bike then?

Or this - and save loads of cash....

There's a nice long thread over at STW on the London Road that may be worth looking at.
Winter bikes, there's loads of em. Have a look at Ribble they do a relatively inexpensive carbon frames bike. Also as has been said maybe a cross bike that can take a mudguard. Say the CAADX ultegra that comes with the Shimano hydraulic brakes for £15000 -

They don't have mudguard mounts though, do they?
What about this?:

Btw is this scheme available to you?

Winter bike - go tiagra/apex/campag equiv or lower. The muck and crap you get on the gear ruins it and these are "cheap as chips" to replace/renew. Performance is absolutely fine - I was riding Claris all of last winter until I got hit by a car and for a commute of 10 miles each way it was solid.
I'd go discs with mudguards and at least 25c clearance.http://www.georgesfoundation.org

Thanks all for the info. Some great ideas there i would never have found. Liking the idea of a cross bike with 53 chain ring for road duties.
Thanks0 -
For a cyclocross bike I might not recommend 53 it's a bit much to push on a heavy bike w wider tires. A compact 50/34 or a triple might be better.
Check out ribble n planetx on their cyclocross n see if the cycle to work applies.

My winter bike's a Racelight Tk (the original version of the frameset that's evolved into todays 4S)
Full SKS Chromoplastic guards, Shimano R501 wheelset, 25mm GP4S tyres, S/H 9 speed Tiagra drivetrain with a 46/36 CX chainset. Perfect for plugging round the mucky lanes when it's cold and / or wet; 8 years old and still going strong, and still a bike I love to ride. On my routes I rarely have to brake, so I don't suffer the rim wear that a commuter would. If I suddenly started commuting I'd probably want discs.0 -

I would add try and get proper hydraulics if possible.0 -
I got a Cannodale Synapse 105 last winter (£1100 down to £800) disk brakes, takes mudguards - I have been very pleased with it0

Dolan Dual - great carbon frame and can take mudguards
