Hi all,

Just bought my first road bike and a new toy to go with it, the Garmin Edge 810 and I'm planning on doing the Coast to Coast with a mate over the next few months.

We're doing Whitehaven to Tynemouth, now I've downloaded the free Opensource maps this morning onto my Edge and got them working spot on, but I was just wondering if anyone has a preset course for the route we're going or is it just as well to use the Opensource maps?

Having not used the Edge yet I'm not sure if the maps will select roads or cycle routes where possible, any advice folks?

  • Not sure if this will work but we recently did this..

Took just over 6 hours with the wind behind us all the way. A really good scenic route with some lovely quiet roads and only a couple of nasty climbs.

I used the Strava route builder to create it and just tweaked it a little to avoid some main roads.

Firstly, maps and routes are different things.

Secondly, whether or not a plotted route already exists kind of depends on the route you're planning to do doesn't it?

If you're aiming to follow the course that Open Cycling use for their C2C event then you can download the GPX from their website.

Or you can create one using MapMyRide, Bikely etc. and copy it into your Garmin.

I would not rely on the auto routing functions of the GPS unit, they are dependent on the routing information in the map, which isn't always that good. Even the websites can take you down unmetalled roads etc. if you're not careful with them.

Thanks for the replies, I think I've sorted it, I found the routes that somebody else has done following the route we intend to do on Garmin Connect and got those onto my unit.

    Cheers
