Hi all.

My son is 15 y/o. And he seems to be pretty addicted to cycling. He just got back from a ride on his 2015 Specialized Allez Sport, he went 32 miles, doing two laps of my 16 mile course. In total he climbed 1550 ft. The thing is though he was averaging 19.7 mp/h not only that but on the second lap his average speed was dead on 20 mp/h. Now I'm no expert but that does seem pretty quick, particularly for his age. Now I am wondering if he should be competing and if so how do I get him into a race?

Thanks :)

It's a good average speed and one that a well-trained amateur rider could be expected to hit over a route like that. But average speed doesn't ever tell the full story and is not necessarily a good indicator of race fitness.

Look on the BC calendar for some youth/U16 events (they are getting fewer at this time of the season), line him up and see how he gets on..

Decent speed there - he needs to get involved with a local club I think.

I'm not saying he's the next Chris Froome or anything - but he'd not be out of his depth in a club.

Looks a strong pace, get him involved in local racing, time trials, hill climbs maybe. Ban any contact with girls until he's 21 and signed with a pro team. :)

    And then wait for:

"Can I have a better bike dad?"

    Good for him and you.

At 15 years old, the starting point is asking him if he fancies having a go. But a club would be good to see if he likes the culture and he's definitely strong enough to not feel out of his depth.
Plenty of kids have no interest in competing regardless of talent and converse is also true.
