Greetings, ...so i got me one of those Boardman mountain bike things about 2 months ago, having had absolutely no interest in bikes, turns out they are kinda fun.

So i've buggered the outer chainring after only a few months use, I'm aware that it's an XC bike and i'm probably flinging it down things im not supposed to..I could get a replacement 42t outer for £25, but so far as i've figured out I cannot fit any kind of bash guard to stop this happening again, is it a false economy to replace it ? Would I be better fitting a new chainset like SRAM GX 1000 10-Speed GXP Chainset, i could fit a guard to.

What do you mean by buggered? Has the chainring had lots of rock strikes?
If the crankset is a four bolt setup there shouldn't be a problem using a bash - however you may need to buy long chainring bolts.
If the crankset is a three bolt setup your options are more limited, you could dry to drop the chainring size to something like a 36 or 38t for more ground clearance - and also just get into the habit of going into the big ring for downhill, your chain will give the chainring some more protection.

Yep ive knackered some teeth with rock strikes, outer cog snags the chain....so its useless. The FSA comet is indeed a three bolt setup, these limitations where the reason i was considering switching to a four bolt crankset...as there doesn't appear to be any kind of bash device, might be pissing money away replacing something that i cant protect from damaging again.

If you have a 2 ring crankset it's not as easy as buddy suggests to fit a bash, there is nowhere to mount it, it's OK if it's it's a triple crankset mounting just two rings in the inner and mid location.

Hope do a chainring with a built in bash which would do the job.

Yes i am discovering that things one would think would be simple...like fitting a bash to a 2x10, are anything but.

So if i decided to go with this..http://www.wiggle.co.uk/sram-gx-1000-2x10-gxp-chainset-with-am-guard/ .. (more expensive that the deore, but it comes with guard). Could i use my existing BB?...easy enough job for a halfwit to change the chainset.?

You can use your current BB if it's GXP.

Can't see any sort of guard in that photo, so wondering what it refers to!

Hey again, ....i'm getting myself horribly confused about bottom bracket standards. According to the manufacturer's spec the BB is a FSA Mega Exo 68mm Shell.

I really want to ditch this FSA comet crankset and replace it with the Sram gx 1000 2x10...which comes in gxp/or bb30. If i have to replace the BB then so be it,....is there a layman's guide to BB standards?? What i've read so far, isnt doing me any favours
