Gear cables
So what are the best choices in 2015? I need to recable my gears. Shimano Ultegra/105 levers. Do PTFE make a big difference or should I just get some cheapo stainless cables?

shimano PTFE or polymer for the rear and a stainless for the front with shimano SP-41 outer gives the best bang for the buck (buy separately off chain reaction rather than a cable kit is generally cheaper too)0

If it's the earlier 10 speed stuff the Shimano SS inners / SP41 outers are all you need. I bought a Shimano gear cable kit last time I recabled my 10 speed 105; handy because you get all the necessary ferrules, end caps etc.
If it's 11 speed 105 / Ultegra use the Shimano Polymer coated inners.0 -
Ok thanks a lot for your advice. How long do you generally find the cables last? I've seen people in threads saying 6 months.... my are 3 years old with about 8000km but changing has become agricultural so I figured swapping them couldn't do any harm.BASI Nordic Ski Instructor

depends how much wet/winter use really.
new cables and chain pretty much == new bike in terms of shifting.
go PTFE/polymer at the rear for slicker shifts. front doesn't matter so much0 -

My 10 speed 105 seems to eat the cable inside the RH shifter every 2 or 3 years. Front mech cable seems to last indefinitely.
Just fitted new outers for the first time after 8 years use.0 -

haven't seen anything to match shimano SP-41 and PTFE/polymer0 -
I buy a new inner cable for the RD about once a year - it frays in the shifter and if I don't replace it before it's gone too far it's a right PITA to get out.
Seems a bit more frequent than I'd expect to have to replace it, but then I do change gear an awful lot - seem to be forever going up and down the cassette.
I pay about £4 for the cable, and if the old one comes out easily the whole job takes me about 15 mins.Is the gorilla tired yet?0 -

i've had this happen to friends on a few rides but never heard of it in this frequency0 -
That sounds like there's a small burr or other sharp edge in the shifter mechanism.0

Not sure I can face taking it all apart for the sake of a few quid and a few minutes once a year.Is the gorilla tired yet?0 -

Shimano STIs are hard to take apart and put back together, good call0 -

I just accept the inevitability of the cable fraying inside the shifter and at the first sign of crunchy shifting I replace the inner cable. It's a pretty easy job on my old side exit 105 and Tiagra shifters.0 -
I recabled 6700 with the new polymer cables and SP41 outers recently. Shifting is very light and impressive but the polymer is prone to coming off.0
