2 teeth...
Do you use your bottom sprocket much ? Ever found yourself pedalling too slowly up hill to keep a decent pace up ?0 -

I went up a long steep hill during a sportif in liphook at the weekend and I did feel I could have done with a lower gear.
I have never felt like I need a higher gear. but I would worry about the possibility of loosing one in the mid range....0 -
I'd not worry so much about a sprocket mid range. Pedal faster in a lower gear will be good for you anyway.
Low gears are the important ones - I've never had need of a higher gear - but many is the time I wished for a lower one.0 -
so if I went for the 12-30 would I have issues with my rear derailleur?0

What model RD do you have?0

What model RD do you have?
its an Ultegra (I think 5800)0 -
5800 would be 105 not Ultegra and 5800 would be 11 speed in which you can't get a 12-30 cassette and Tiagra wouldn't be compatible.
I assume you actually have 6700 as in 10 speed Ultegra.
One thing to note is that your chain may work ok or you may want to add a couple of links. If you decide not to lengthen your chain make sure you never ride big/big.
Other thing to note is that you won't have a spacer with Tiagra but you will need to fit the supplied spacer with Ultegra.0 -

that's my bike.
what do you mean by spacer... where would it fit?0 -
As I thought it's 6700.
The spacer will be supplied with the cassette. It just goes onto the freehub first then the rest of the cassette. The cassette will be supplied with all parts in the correct order. You just need to keep them that way.0 -

Save your money and order a Tiagra 12-30 cassette from CRC - £12.50

The Tiagra 12-30 doesn't need a spacer (as is the case with your current 11-28 cassette). However it's likely that the Ultegra cassette will require a spacer (usually but not always supplied with the cassette) that needs to be fitted to the freehub before the cassette is mounted to maintain the correct chain line
Against that you are looking at more than twice the price for the Ultegra version. OK you might be saving 100g but you can offset that easily in other ways.
I've used Tiagra 12-30 cassettes on all of my previous 10-speed builds and can't fault them. In fact after migrating to 11-speed, I have a couple of spare 12-30 Tiagra cassettes lying around with little mileage (maybe 300 max) on each. PM me if you are interested and I can send you some pics0 -

can you give me some suggestions0 -
The usual suggestions are: less water in your bottles, a good bowel movement before setting off, and losing any spare bodyfat you have about your person.
Lighter tyres and tubes?
Are you really interested in making your bike 100g lighter? If so, head on over to Weight Weenies. Loads of stuff there. You could end up spending a fortune though. They wouldn't be telling you to use a Tiagra cassette...0 -
Agree with the above I always run 12-30 and I've used either Tiagra or Ultegra at various times and I don't notice any difference.0
-
I don't mind spending a little extra to save a little weight here and there. I have already upgraded the tyres and tubes. the wheels seem pretty light anyway.
as the bike is a few years old I was going to replace the cassette and chain instead of a service.0 -
28 teeth is on the limit of a short cage rear mech, with a 30 tooth sprocket you may need to move to a long cage rear mech, not 100% sure but it rings a bell when I last did some research.Obsessed is a word used by the lazy to describe the dedicated!0

If the OP has a RD-6700-A SS he can use a 12-30T cassette without problems if he adjusts the B-Tension screw and adds links to the chain. If it is the earlier RD-6700 SS then max recommended low sprocket is 28T, although when this topic comes up there are those who say they have used the earlier model without problems and others who says their rear mech. exploaded into pieces.0

Well, that's what 'they' tell you the limit of a short cage is......
I just happened to have a 12-32 knocking around so I thought I'd try it with a short reach rear mech after someone on this forum said they already did, so I'm now running a 34/46 chainset with a 12-32 cassette on my CX bike with a short reach 105 mech.Works great. Plenty of B screw and proper chain length is key!
