Castelli Gabba

Seeing as the Great British Summer seems to have passed us by quickly and the weather at the moment looks decidedly crap I am looking to buy a rain top and have after much research decided on a Castelli Gabba SS jersey.

What I am unable to fathom though is the difference between the Castelli Gabba and the Gabba 2.

Anyone have any idea?

I know one difference is the rear pockets. One of the complaints with the original Gabba was the pockets would fill with water so the Gabba 2 has a mesh at the base of the pockets for water to escape.

The Gabba is one of my favourite bits of clothing (so good i have 2!).

There isn't much difference between the original and the Gabba 2. The main difference is in the pockets (the Gabba 2 has a sort of mesh at the bottom of the pockets so any rain water can escape), and also the shoulders. The original Gabba was fantastic but the shoulders were almost too square and didn't sit quite right. The newer version is much improved in this area and feels more comfortable - not that the original was at all uncomfy though.

You won't be disappointed with either.

It does look good, however seems to only come in long sleeve versions, I am definitely after a short sleeve version to pair with the nano-flex armwarmers. Still a good option though.

    Great, thanks for this.

Seems like the Gabba 2 is the one to go for then, have found one on Ribble which seems pretty cheap @ £79.16 (no VAT as I am in the Channel islands), just have to decide on black or fluro yellow (club kit is blue and yellow), although I can imagine the fluro yellow will get pretty stained very quickly from the mud and spray on the roads when raining.

I have black and the yellow. The yellow does mark quite badly, but is very bright and gives you confidence of being very visible. Both have a (thin) reflective strip across the top of the pockets which does work very well at night.

One more thing to note, the fit is not the usual Castelli, it is slightly larger so no need to size up.

I'd definitely plump for the yellow.

Whilst it does mark more easily than the black you are going to be wearing it in predominantly dull conditions and its like have an extra great big FO light.

Good to know as most castelli kit I have to size up.

Thanks all, enough procrastinating for me, time to pull the trigger :D

I disagree, I sized up and my Gabba 2 is still tighter than I was expecting

Version 2 also has a flap over the front zip that I think was new.

My SS Gabba is definitely a smaller fit than my other Castelli Jersey - a LS Trasparante. Both are medium but the Gabba is definitely a 'race fit'' the other fits just nicely. That said I've heard they work better from an insulation point if snugger

In order for the Gabba and other weather proof jerseys to work properly, they need to be skin tight. So I would suggest you try on your normal Castelli size

Why do they need to be skin tight to work properly?

Assuming you are a member of the Parentini test team -I'm surprised you have not mentioned the Mossa - although I think it is much too warm to wear it at the moment -unless of course there is a version of the Mossa which works in warmer temperatures.

    Why worry about lighter/brighter Gabbas?
You are riding with mudguards thru winter of course and so are your ride mates.

I'm not allowed to recommend parentini products. If you want to PM me I could tell you about the new Mossa products coming out though

Why do they need to be skin tight to work properly?

The closer the fabric is to your skin, the quicker the sweat is transported through the fabric, and the quicker the sweat evaporates, leaving you drier. It's the same reason why your base layers should fit like a second skin too.

    +1
same size as other Castelli stuff for me. The long sleeve version has ventilator zips on the body, which I find very useful.

After reading some of the replies on here I am now very confused about sizing??

I like my cycling tops to be tight, almost skin tight (hate flappy clothing), but obviously I want to be able to do up anything I buy!

I googled size charts and it seems I am an XXl in sizing for Castelli jerseys (42” chest), however in DHB jerseys I am a large which fits fine but the size chart indicates a 40”-41.5” chest size, so in a Castelli Gabba that would put me in an XL (39”-41” chest), In Santini Tops I am an XL which is 40.9”-42.5” which is more akin to the Castelli sizing for a XXL (41”-43” chest)????????????????

We have a shop locally that sells Castelli, I can nip in there to try on an XL and XXL jersey (if they have them in stock), can anyone confirm if the Gabba 2 sizes the same as the short sleeved summer jerseys?

    Jez this is confusing.

I have a Gabba long sleeve, I am a 40" chest and I went for large. It is snug but does up. Don't forget the Gabba material is stretchy.

I am a 39 chest and 72kg. The large in the Gabba is close and perfect.
To put this in context, my Alpha jersey and Jacket are both large as well, but the climbers jersey and aero jersey i have are both xl as large were much much tighter (i mean we are talking almost circulation cut off tight). I also have a Velocissimo in a large, this is a much more relaxed fit and i tend not to wear it due to that.

I think if you look at the reviews of the gabba most do suggest the sizing is not as small as castelli usually run.
Your best bet is to try one on in a shop, or order two sizes and send the one which doesn't fit back.

Just tried on a Velocissimo top and a Volo top both in XL (no XXL available) and the Volo was sung but ok, felt fine when in the riding position but tight across the shoulders and chest when stood upright (which apparently its meant to). The Velocissimo was a little looser but still acceptable IMO, so based on this I would be an XL I think?

B0llocks, the Gabba2 was £79 before VAT at Ribble yesterday, didn't buy as was worried about sizing and now its shot up to £116 before VAT.

Weird. For the last few weeks everywhere has been selling them at £95. Wiggle included and Sigma Sports where I got mine. They've shot up everywhere to closer RRP. Reckon they've spotted autumn is just around the corner.

I'm 39/40" chest and the Gabba2 in Large is good for me. Snug but ok for a winter base layer when needed. Best bit of kit I've purchased tbh.

After Ribble upped their price by 46% overnight last week, I have been looking into alternatives to the Gabba as I cant believe that Castelli are the only ones after a couple of years making this sort of jersey and have come across the Etxeondo WS Team Edition Jersey, which is the one the Giant Aplicin team use.

The reviews I have seen are favourable and really rate it as an alternative to the Gabba, it also comes with arm warmers in the same material and colour as the jersey (included in the cost), I have found this for £78 all in which seems like a good deal to me.

However I am keen to hear from anyone who has one, what is it like, any good?

In regards to the Gabba you are still getting an amazing piece of kit even at the higher price. Its worth every penny and through last winter was pretty much all i wore for 6 months. Thermal base layer and nanoflex arms in the really cold or wet weather and on its own when it was a bit warmer. I will be buying another one this winter purely so i dont have to keep washing the same jersey over and over.

In regards to size - i bought the same as i normally buy in Castelli - 40inch chest and a large. Its nice and snug and fits me perfectly. Its feels a bit small when you first put it on as its stretchy material but when riding it feels perfect.

I bought in black and could imagine any other colour looking a bit grubby after a few wet rides

Opted for the Etxeondo WS Team Edition Jersey in the end in XL, will see what quality is like when I get it but from reading reviews Etxeondo stuff is apparently very well made.

This will just be used for Spring/Autumn riding so hopefully will be warm enough for that with a decent baselayer, and I will ride in club kit in the summer and winter (club kit supplier doesn't have anything like this in their range)

Will post a review once I have tried it for a couple of weeks and let everyone know what its like.

That would be useful to know. I'm thinking of getting a Gabba for the Autumn/Winter but saw the Exteondo and wondering what it's like.

I am 41.5 and XL is a snug/tight fit about right I would say. But as regards warmth/wind resistance I honestly can't see what all the praise/fuss is about as I don't it rate it much if any better than <£20 Chinese jerseys in those respects ..!!
