Can someone tell be what's the diameter of their hollowtech 2 spanner. I've bought 2 online and neither fit the cup because they are too big.....

The 2 I've already bought are 45mm in diameter. Do Hollowtech cups come in different sizes???

Are you trying to use it on a Dura Ace BB? New DA BBs are a smaller diameter and a plastic insert is included with a new BB that fits inside the tool to reduce the diameter. Otherwise I think HT BBs are a standard size.

I suspect that 6800 BBs are the same diameter as the DA 9000 ones therefore you will need one of these:-

New, smaller diameter BB cups appear to be used on all the 11 speed Shimano stuff, so 105 5800 upwards.

That plastic adapter ring should be supplied with the BB allowing the use of the older tool, but I have heard reports that it isn't strong enough to properly tighten the cups in some cases.

Far better to get the right size tool. Park tools appear to do one for SM-BB9000 (Dura-Ace 9000) 39mm dia BBT-49, and one for SM-BBR60 (Ultegra 6800, 105 5800) 41mm dia BBT-59, so even they appear to be different sizes!

Anyone confirm this apparent madness from Shimano?

    adapter worked fine for me.

the new thinner BBs are supposed to have less rolling/turning resistance
