I hope this is the right forum.

I am after some rechargeable lights but I am not sure which one’s to go for. Have been to my local bike shop and seen Moon XP500 at 500 lumins which includes the back light as well. Price for this is £85 which is in a sale reduced from £160 I think)

I have also seen One23 Extreme Bright 1000, Front Light in a Weymouth bike shop at 1000 lumens max output £79.99 (for front light).

Would like lights for cycling round town and unlite country roads. Can you advise me which of the two listed above I should go for?

Many thanks.

If the Moon comes with the Shield 60 rear, then that's a very good set, There's a beam comparison page on the road.cc website that helps here; let me dig it up.

Edit: scroll down on this page.

I've got a brace of the Moon XP300s and both of them on mid-setting throw enough light to comfortably see on unlit country roads. One on full beam more than enough, thus one of the XP500s on a mid-setting would be fine. Also have the Shield, even on the lowest setting it throws out a massive amount of light: if you get one don't look directly at it when on flash or strobe setting ;-)

You'll struggle to get a better deal than this:

  • Thanks for your replies'. I have checked Edinburgh Bikes but it says the item is no longer around. Is the shield you mentioned the rear light I mentioned?

They must have sold out, not surprised at that price. Yes, the Shield is the rear light. The Smart Lunar R2 mentioned by Oxoman is also a very good rear light.
  • I'm a bit weary of getting lights of the net, is there a link to the Smart Lunar R2 please? Also are Moon lights very good?
  • Only thing with the Moon is that there's no side glow. Does that matter?
