Should I be nervous about removing/installing pressfit

Need to get my trusty old winter Trek back to usable condition, which unsurprisingly means a new press fit BB.
Considering that tools + webprice press fit BB is not much more than full retail + labor $ cost, should i be nervous about the home mechanic process of removing / fitting press fit BB? Does frame material make any difference?

Anything involving force or a hammer makes me nervous

No, it's trivial. Get the right removal tool, and buy or make a bearing press. Takes minutes. If you're using a PF BB, i.e. one with nylon cups that press in, you're done. If your BB has bearings that press straight in, like BB30, you'll need to check the circlips that stop the bearing going too far in, and decide if you want to use a bearing retention compound (a kind of glue) which can stop the dreaded BB creak.

As it's a Trek, BB90 is their variation of BB86 - as you won't be re-using the BB then simply drifting out the old BB is all that's needed (no need for a special removal tool). You will need a bearing press to install
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

i used a G-clamp and wood to press it in, no worries. oh and back of a hammer to take them out, little tap, braced the frame. done.

Start by tapping in different places around the cup not just on one side/place so they gradually ease out. But sometimes they do require a hefty clonk or two to push them out - so if you are afraid of doing that then get your LBS to do it for you :)

Sometimes you have to smash the hell out of them to get them out.

  • I've got two bikes with BB30 and it's an easy job, done in 15 minutes (and I faff around) - use the park tool to knock them out and a headset press to push them in. Lots of cheaper and innovative ways of doing it without the dedicated tools.
