Strange noise from chain ring

Hi,
I am not sure of the best way I can describe this, but I have recently started to get a kind of 'snak'ing sound coming from (I think) the chain ring/pedals area. It's a bit like when you haven't quite changed gear properly, and then it jumps in, but not nearly as loud. I've not worked out a pattern yet - I think I get it more when exerting more pressure, but also happens when gently peddling. Can't feel anything noticeable (i.e. pedals don't jump or anything).
Any ideas what to check? ... or even better what to do to try and isolate the noise?
I am guessing it's the bearings in the bottom bracket, but not sure...
Note: I don't have the tools/experience to do things like checking the bearings - would have to take it to LBS for a complete service to get something like that done, but thinking that if I could isolate the noise, it might give me something to specifically ask the lbs to look at - at the moment only option feels like a full service.
Any advice appreciated.

move the chain off the chainrings (to inside of frame). can rotate the chainset by hand now and feel for roughness. can also try to move side to side to check for any play in the bottom bracket bearings0

Didn't give any clues unfortunately ... spinning chainset without chain attached was ok - no obvious sign of internal friction and no noticeable play/give. I did have a minor service about 8 weeks ago, and they replaced my rear cassette and re-indexed the gears - gear changes are ok (not 100%, but no worse than they were before), but wondering if it could be something to do with that that I am feeling through the pedal, but actually could be coming from the rear via the chain. Grating noise seems to be more noticeable/frequent when I am putting more pressure on the pedals.
Perhaps the only option is to go for a full gold service where they'll completely strip down and re-grease/rebuild .... unfortunately my skills/toolset only go as far as fixing a puncture0 -
it's a little hard to understand your problem, maybe your rear gears just need a slight adjustment?
i doubt a full strip down and regrease is needed.
you could take each wheel out, check for play in the axle (try to wiggle it up and down), spin it holding the axle and should spin smoothly.
can rotate pedals (just pedal, not chainset) to check for smooth bearings in pedal. try to wiggle pedals up and down again to check for play0 -

Yes - wondering if this might be the issue - had a closer look over the weekend, and when turning pedals backwards slowly noticed that the chain was slightly 'jumping' (but ultimately staying in same gear) every now and again. Didn't have time to look in too much detail so next step will be to try this in all gears and see if any are worse than others. I think I get it more when in the higher back gears (i.e. smaller back cogs), but will try it out when cycling + also just manually.
If this is the problem, any ideas on the impact of riding without fixing? .. will I wear out my rear cogs /chain more quickly?
Also, as I had a service + new rear cog fitted about 3 months ago, wondering if I should just take back to LBS and ask to re-index again ... or is it now too late?0 -
3 months is a bit late i think.
try turning the barrel adjuster at the rear mech 1/4 turn anti clockwise, then try shifting all the gears, see if that's better. if not, try another 1/4 turn0 -
Park Tools page on indexing gears is just brilliant

Follow the instructions (don't skip or do it the way that seems more obvious) and at the end of it you will have nicely indexed gears.0
