Rear wheel problems

The rear wheel on my mountain bike spins fine, but when I pedal the front of the wheel rubs against the frame. Like I said, it spins completely normal, but when I put the slightest pressure on the pedal, the wheel rubs on the frame. Could this be a broken or bent axle? I'm stumped as to what it could be. Has this happened to anyone, or does anyone know what it is?
Thanks in advance.

Bent or broken axle or bearings that are totally shot, what dropouts? Inlcined, horizontal or vertical? Apart from vertical the other two need the retention nuts to be tight or the wheel will move in the dropout.

    Which bike would help!

Thanks for the response, The bike is a Diamondback Response XE. I'm pretty sure the dropouts are vertical.

I took it apart, and my suspicions are correct. The axle was broken. When I took it apart, though, all the balls from the bearings came out, too. Is that replaceable, or do I need a new hub? A new hub would be nice but spending more money... not so much!

You can just buy a new axle (get a cro-mo for a few pence more it's a lot better) and new balls (universal sized) any bike shop including halfords will do them or go on eBay.
