Problem trying to find the right size wheels.

I need a new rear wheel for my bike but can't seem to find one that fits properly. The wheels are 26" and the tyres that are fitted on it are 26x2.1". I tried a 26x1.75" wheel on it that I had and the width of the rim was was considerably smaller than the ones that were fitted on it. How do I find what size wheels I need? I can't seem to find any guide that explains wheel rim width measurements, they just talk about diameter and circumference.

Rim width isn't too critical. For a 2.1" tyre anything from a 17mm to 30mm internal rim width will be fine.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350

The problem is that the brake pads are way off from the rim.0

Then you need to adjust them.
