Switching from triple to double crankset

Hello there!
Say that I get a new set of Deore components for my bike and the crankset is with triple chainring. If in the future I would like to switch to double chainring, how compatible is that? Is this switch possible? Should I also replace other parts such as the cassette?

You can run a triple chainset with one, two or three chain rings with no problems.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350
