Hey everyone, my decathlon triban 300 is due a drive chain replacement as it's starting to develop sharkfin teeth, does anyone know anything about 'ATELIER MYGAL triple chainset' as there's a a set on decathlon cheap at the moment here

This is my current chainset

Thanks in advance. Side note, the freehub is starting to go on my rear wheel, anyone know if you can remove them for replacement? I took the axel out and there's no 10mm allen socket for unscrewing it.

It's not a brand that I have any knowledge of. If you really have to replace the whole chainset, I'd stick to the type that's already on your bike. At least you know how it looks. You original chainset seems to be a standard UNI square taper BB interface. I cannot see that detail in the photos of the Atelier, and it doesn't go into it in the text.

Of course, the question is why you have to replace the whole chainset. Can't you find chainrings of the right PCD/BCD for a reasonable price? At least your original chainset has the BCD marked, considerately.

Unless your crank arms are bent or cracked, or the BB interface badly worn, there should be no need to replace the whole chainset. The black finish of your current model can always have scratches filled and painted. Silver crank arms will just continue to look scratched.
To err is human, but to make a real balls up takes a super computer.

That mygal chainset looks fugly IMO, I'd buy it and put the chainrings on the original cranks as they both appear to have 5 arm BCD spacing, though check with DEC first.
  • I'm replacing the whole chainset cause for what it's worth it's cheaper and a bit less hassle. I was just putting it out there really to see if anything knows anything about this weird massively discounted chainset, looks weird though you're right, and what's with the 'MYGAL', might look a bit silly...
  • I do love my triban 300 don't get me wrong it's incredible value for money with a lovely frame and paint job, but it's no garage queen so I'm not massively bothered about how it looks.

I think the Mygal one is likely to have alloy chainrings whilst your current one has steel. Alloy is lighter but will wear out quicker. You could just buy chainrings, but they tend to be expensive. Another option is to get the Spa cycles alloy chainset:

TBH - given the cost of the direct replacement from Decathlon that seems the sensible option (provided the metal is recycled).

Am I missing something? Why don't you get the second one you linked to? It's cheaper and will likely last longer (although in my experience with Shimano kit, alloy chainrings can be fairly hard wearing)

Or were you tempted by the shiny alloy?
  • To be honest I was just doing a quick shout to see if it's as much of a bargain as it appears, if anyone had any information on it.
