As recommended as a good value purchase, took delivery of a pair of Shimano M395/M396 levers and calipers last night from CRC.

Hose lengths were spot on, so fitted quickly and easily.

The rear went on fine, but at the front although they went on fine there was the very faintest of catches apparently the caliper on the outside of the disc. Light was fading fast and rain approaching so didn't too much thinking about it, so I just put a 1mm washer in between the caliper and the fork post mounts to move the caliper out a little which solved the issue.

Is this a common issue when fitting new brakes, or does it point to something going wrong?

    if shouldn't touch it
    I understand that!

It was more the use of a thin washer to space things out a touch to avoid the contact.

TBH I was surprised it rubbed at all. Discs I think are Hayes (bike was fitted with Hayes MX5 brakes, so I presume the discs are the stock rotors supplied with MX5 brakes).

Check the Disc size, is it 160mm or slightly larger (such as a 165mm)?

    Spec says it was 160mm.

At worst I've lost 1mm of pad on the disc, and the nuts into the forks went in plenty deep.

I will take another look tonight in case it was something stupid like the pad spring / spreader catching and needing re-seating, but on Saturday the bike is going up (and down) Helvellyn (cautiously!) no matter what!

I wouldn't worry about this. I've had to do this on a few bikes.
If you want to check where the pad contacts on the rotor, just run a pencil across the braking surface, take it for a ride then check where the lead has rubbed off. Bet you'll find that you've not lost that 1mm!
