Hi forum people, bit of a strange question :? but bear with me...

yesterday while fitting my new chorus 11 speed rear mech onto the frame I had 2 mins out while I had a cup of tea, at this point I took it upon myself to read the 'manual' from inside the box, this is when I noticed the statement ... 'this component is uncompatible with(meaning it won't work with) ergo levers marked ultra shift etc etc etc' ....

At this point I sorted through the box of new 'upgrade' components only to find the chorus 11 speed ergo levers are marked as ultrashift ? :(

is it true that 2 chorus 11 speed components are totally incompatible with each other ?

wtf did Campag do to make to pieces of kit from the same gruppo incompatible

Someone please tell me it's not true, please let it work :|

As long as they're 11 speed that's fine. The rear mech just does what the shifters tell it.

The rear mech just does what the shifters tell it.

    To a point.

The amount of lateral movement per shift is the product of the cable pull (how much cable is pulled by the lever in mm) and the conversion ratio of the derailleur... which can be 1:1, 1:2 or any number in between. The conversion ratio is determined by the geometry of the parallelogram, or in simple words by the ratio in length of the two types of arms of the parallelogram.
At Campagnolo they like to change parallelogram geometry and they have done so a few times over the years, most notably during the 9 speed era around 2000, so every geometry only shifts correctly with the shifter it is supposed to be paired with. Sometimes the difference between geometries is insignificant and parts might work OK together anyway other times it is significant and it means things don't work together unless they belong to the same generation.
I have heard somewhere that 2015 has brought a new change in geometry, but that can be utter internet rubbish or not, I have no idea.

    Hmmm interesting

The rear mech is marked Chorus 11 RD-15 on the box, I'll post some pics when I get back from work.

Thanks for taking the time to reply

All the new 2015 Chorus/Record/SR stuff is indeed incompatible with previous years, and vice-versa.

I have the feeling that my joy was somewhat short lived

knowing my luck I guarantee that the symbol is missing from atleast 1 of the components if not 2

  • Just a slightly off topic query.

Can I run a Chorus 11s derailleur with my Athena Ultrashift levers? I want to run the 11 – 29 rear cassette rather than the compact chainrings but the Athena derailleur just won't make the jump. It rubs on the second largest cog.

I have a huge range of Campag groupsets from 1970's Super Record up to 2014 Athena on a variety of steel and carbon bikes, but have never felt the need to step up to Chorus or Record 11s, mostly because I'm a distance (Audax) rider not a racer.

i'd like to retain the Athena groupset on my climber but swap up to the Chorus derailleur if it will work with the levers and the wider range of the cassette.

    cheers

What year is the Athena mech? I've got an Athena 2013 one and it works fine with a 29.

So long as your Rd is not a 2015 model then yes it will work with any Athena Shifters. The new cable pull only affect chorus recored and super record parts.

Just looked at the Campag tech specs and all recent Athena should take up to 29 (the group comes with Chorus cassettes, including the one going up to 29).

Might be worth checking the Campag tech docs and make sure your bike's hanger is long enough (as per the requirements). Have you tried adjusting the pulley-cage-tension-ratchet-screw-thing?
