Travelling with a bike

Does anyone know the best way to fly with a road bike.
I have travelled extensively with an old mountain bike which received no packaging or care prior to flying but my more expensive and delicate road bike might need looking after a little.
Can you hire a tough bike box or are they cheap anyway.

    As a one off, hire. If you plan plenty flights then buy, but don't skimp.

    As to your original question, the best way to fly with a bike is downhill onto a ramp and away.
    The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
