fat tyres Vs fast tyres

I have gone through a lot of tyres over the past 2-3 years and I like to test them for speed along a traffic free 5 Km loop which has roughly 40 mt of gentle climbing. We won't name the loop...
I always achieved the best times with the tyres which are supposed to be the fastest: Corsa CX tubulars (110 PSI), Schwalbe ONE (80 PSI) and IRC roadlite (90 PSI) tubeless generally get me around the course in 8:40 to 8:50 if the air pressure is not too high.
Never managed to get any good time on Pave' 27 mm tubulars (80 PSI)... roughly lapping at 9:05-9:10, similar times achieved with fast cyclocross tyres like a pair of Vittoria XN run tubeless (60 PSI) . Touring tyres like Vittoria Randonneur PRO 32 with butyl inner are slower, around 9:20 and knobblies like Vittoria XG tubeless are similar.
This morning I managed a 9:05 with pair of Vittoria Voyager Hyper 37 mm with latex inners (60 PSI), which considering the high air pressure is pretty good for a 15 quid thing the size of a moped tyre... look forward to trying with low air pressure to see how close I can get to the top end race tyres
Anyone else going quickly with massive tyres?

Me. Because I have Hyper Voyagers.
You should try them with latex inners... I use Vittorias 25-28 mm, got them cheap from Ribble.
Lovely tyres, yet I can't help thinking they are massive...left the forum March 20230 -
Yeah, I too have the 38mm Hypers, lovely tyre but they are massive!
Measured at 38mm on my Archtypes.
I've never time myself but found them fast - until you hit a few hills and you notice the extra weight over my Diamate's..0 -
My trusty 531 Claud Butler was made for 27" wheels, and annoyingly the brake drop at the back is too long to fit a 700c. I currently have a 27x1 1/4 Hutchinson on, and wire bead Gatorskins in the same size I've found to be reasonably quick. My TT bike with 19-21mm (usually Vittoria) does feel a lot faster, but I have always liked the ability of big tyres to deal with bad road surfaces.0

I run my Schwalbe ones at 95 and maybe a bit more if I want to go fast. I'd find them a bit squidgy at 80 psi.BASI Nordic Ski Instructor

My rims are bigger than yours, I need less pressureleft the forum March 20230 -
I have the 35mm hyper on my cx bike for road riding @ 60 psi then seem abit hard, ride seems fairly harsh somehow compared to what I was expecting from a 120 tpi wide tyre, so might try lower psi :?:
Rims are some old wider than standard araya touring ones.
As for speed no idea if they are faster or slower compared to decent 23mm's but they don't feel much slower, once you get up to speed. Aceleration does feel slower.0 -
I'm running ultremos @ 125psi they are rated to 145psi. Should i be running them lower ?Show me your green bits i might buy them !0

I hit 60kph regularly on this :-)
I had to ride a short-section of tarmac mid-way through a ride and someone on a road bike overtook, I was soon tucked-in on his backwheel at 20mph - 4" tyres @ 5psi make quite a lot of noise!Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0 -
Wouldn't surprise me in the least, good XC MTB tyres when put on the few rolling tests that I've seen on line are not far off good road race tyres, and faster than some of the budget tyres, and that's at normal for the use psi.
Bares out what I've noticed with the old MTB and CX bike both with Racing Ralph's the old MTB is a aero as a brick and heavy but rolls well and the CX is broadly in the same ball park quickness as the road bikes I've had before and folks who overtake I suspect are just faster!0 -

Custom fatbike designed and built by me - haven't been riding much on the road this year as I've been having too much fun riding this - Fat is the new skinny!Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0 -
I've got the Voyager Hypers, 37mm, on my London Road and run them at about 40 front, 65 rear.
That's based on a calculation that aims for the 15% drop in each tire (I'm 90kgs and ride with 1 or 2 reasonably loaded panniers most of the time).
Feels pretty sweet over the bumps and nice and quick to me, it really did feel counter intuitive when I felt how soft the front was the first time I set it at that pressure though.0 -

They had one of these fat bikes on display last time I was in Pedal Heaven in Fleet, i think it was a Specialised, as most things are in there.0
