Shed conversion to bike/training room.

Evening all
As baby no.2 is due next month, I was faced with the prospect of losing the spare room that I currently use for my bikes and training on the turbo.
The only real option was to convert the small brick shed in the back garden, so two weeks ago I set to it.
Here's what I was faced with at the start - rammed with crap and no door!
I boarded the ceiling, fitted lights, moved the electrics, sealed the walls with pva, painted, fitted skirting boards, underlay and a carpet. Then I fitted my PS3, 37" TV and homeplugs for decent internet as I like to watch stuff on Netflix whilst I use Trainer Road on the iPad.
Obviously security was an issue, so I bought a solid composite door with Yale 'secured by design' locks. The window was sealed shut by winding masonry bolts into the brick ledge, then encasing them in concrete.
And finally today I got the carpet fitted and moved in my bikes, turbo, gaming chair and tool/bike crap drawers. My wife has bought me a beer fridge for my birthday but I haven't got it yet As a bonus my D-lock just fits through the rear triangle of the Scott and behind the wall mount. I'm under no illusions that if anyone ever did get in they'd probably just wreck the bike, but at least they wouldn't ride it away! I've fitted a PIR movement sensing alarm too.
I did the whole thing for £1,000, the door and a skip were the main expenses.

Nice! Just need some sort of heating for playing the PS when it's colder.0
-
Nice work! Looks like an awesome bike space/pain cavern. That window isn't very secure though. Get some reinforcing mesh from a builders merchant (the type that goes in concrete footings) and bolt it to the wall over the inside of the window, that will make it secure (unless someone arrives with an angle grinder or a hack saw and a lot of time...)0
-
Love it - great work0
-
class! Would love to see some more ideas for my spare room that I'm going to turn into a pain cave.0
-
I would have thought about channeling the walls out for the electrics rather than having conduit fixed to the walls.I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.0

Agreed, also maybe think about doing something on the roof as well. Quite common to remove through a thin roof (even motorbikes)0 -

Pretty sure that's a single skin brick wall so that wouldn't be an option.0 -

Before you do any of that, what's your address?www.conjunctivitis.com - a site for sore eyes0 -
'Builders mesh' ?! It's called Weld mesh, you can get different grades of it:

Attach the mesh with something like this [mesh lock - scroll down qtr of a page]:

...and heat the cavern with this:

That's fantastic, enjoy!
I tried to get a "man cave" thread going a while back. I was looking for ideas of what to do with mine. I'm currently sorting it out.
Just had it plastered and the floor put down. The downlights and plug sockets are in.
I need to paint it next ... Got this crazy idea about painting a section of road up the wall, complete with grey tarmac, white centre lines and double yellows! Then I can hang my summer bike on it so it looks like it's riding up hill ..... Anyone done this? Pictures if so? Any recommends on a wall hanger?
The winter bike will live in the turbo trainer.
Just need to install the wardrobe (my cycling gear will live in here), a desk, storage cabinet and a sofa bed!
I've got various bits of pictures for the walls, a Tassimo and music sorted also, but there the last things to do.
I may also tootle off to my LBS to see if they have any old posters/point of sale that I could utilise.
It could make hiding new purchases a damn sight easier lolStill thinking of something clever to say!0 -

Good work!
I am not sure about the combination of turbo and carpet though. The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.Veronese68 wrote:PB is the most sensible person on here.0 -
The window is bottom opening outwards (just the right half as you look from inside). I've drilled and wound 10mm thick masonry 'thunderbolts' into the brick window ledge to prevent it from opening then encased them in concrete along the whole of the ledge. The frame is steel, so as someone mentioned unless a thief turns up with an angle grinder nobody is getting in that way! To get a bike out they'd have to remove the entire frame, and then the Scott is D-locked to the wall mount. When locked the door can only be opened from the inside with the keys.
The roof is the original corrugated asbestos, which I've plaster boarded inside and reinforced with timber beams bolted to the walls. Again, unless someone turns up with a set of ladders and makes a whole load of noise they're not getting in!
It's all about deterrents really, it would take a considerable amount of time, a lot of noise and tools for anyone to break in, and then it's going to take more time to get the Scott (or more likely they'd smash the frame trying). By then the PIR alarm will have gone off too and they'd need to shut that up.
I've got a workout mat for under the turbo, without a carpet the room would be horribly echo-ey and cold, I've also got a space heater if I'm spending time in there in winter and not actually training.
It might look like the bike can be lifted off the mount with the D-lock but it can't, it's a really tight fit.

I actually use a workout mat with an old bath towel on top underneath the bike, plus a sweat cover on the frame. I did the TR sustained power plan earlier this year and I've never sweated so much, a carpet would have been ruined in a week0 -
Really nice setup, I had our outside toilet "converted", low ceiling removed, everything ripped out, damp proofing done etc. I just need to sort my shelving out now. What is the bike hook you're using as I need one too. CheersTrainer Road Blog: https://hitthesweetspot.home.blog/

Have you bolted the turbo trainer to the wall and put the telly on the ceiling?seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

Indoor training is all uphill for him. He can also 'go' whilst on the go.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -
Ahhh I see! It was a large outside toilet, roughly a bike length and a half so works perfectly length wise, you could also have 2 bikes side by side on turbo's if you wish. I'll take a picture later, I know all that must have excited.
