I thought I'd start a new topic on videos that I come across about naughty behaviour on the roads involving cyclists and traffic.

This is a rather friendly part of the forum, where I would try to avoid starting a thread about bad driving/ bad cycling and the likes... it can only escalate... :?left the forum March 20230

OK, thanks for the advice.
If you feel it is better moved elsewhere, or deleted then just let me know.
I certainly wasn't trying to poke it up!0 -

How about I'll post but we keep it friendly?
I'm all for a compromise0 -
That one was quite funny, I have to admit.0

Thought I'd put it in here, although I was debating whether it needed a thread of its own.
Also, if you are on Facebook etc I think it could do with being spread about a bit.0 -
I'm sure many of you saw this on social media but for the ones who didn't:

I did see it.
Not actually listened to the dialogue as I had my kids around, but from what I saw from the off it was never going to end well.
From an objective point I have to say that winding the driver up was not actually going to help.
From experience I have to say I have been known to wind up drivers who have done this to me.
Not an excuse, but it comes out of anger and frustration of the situation coupled with the adrenaline.
Looking back I can say there are a few things I maybe could have avoided doing.0 -

Today's offering.
Luckily no serious injuries, but it just high lights what can happen in a seemingly safe environment.
(On a side note, when it has happened you can see what appears to be headphone wires on the ground. Do you think he was wearing headphones?)0 -
yup - I picked up on the headphone cable as well ...
not trying to blame the cyclist here - but the commentary said that if you pause at 17 seconds the cyclist can see the car ...
now - it looks like this was a helmet mounted camera, the way it's moving about prior to the roundabout - he looks at all the other cars that may be a hazard to him - but doesn't look at the car approaching the roundabout that hit him ... (the car, not the roundabout - he hit the roundabout ... ) so I'd hazard a guess that he hadn't clocked that particular car, he may have done - he just doesn't look straight at the car...
I nearly got hit yesterday on my way home - just by an idiot small lorry driver who passed way to close - I don't know if it was deliberate or not but he's lucky he didn't stop ...0 -
Whether he has headphones on or not seems to be irrelevant to the car hitting him in my opinion. If he's was not wearing headphones, would the car still have hit him? I think so yes.
I think he probably does know the car is approaching, as he goes round you can see the car coming peripherally even if he doesn't turn his head at it. I don't turn my head at every car, it doesn't mean I haven't seen them.0 -
Yeah, I agree.
Maybe he assumed that the car was just going to give way?
I try to look directly at a car coming from my left, eye contact. Keeping a speed that I can either scrub off of stop, should they not stop.
I hate it when they don't stop, it makes me nervous.
When in a car I may slow and keep rolling to feed in behind another car coming from the right, but never with a motorbike or cyclist. No matter how inconvenient I always stop, just to let them know I have seen them and they can get past safely.0 -

The general advice about making eye-contact is of course right, but you have to look where you're going, too.
To be honest, I don't think there was much the cyclist could have done differently (except maybe using high vis, blazing lights and a police escort) - the driver didn't look, didn't stop and was 100% at fault.0 -
When approaching mini roundabouts or passing junctions on the left I always make sure I check the traffic approaching and make eye contact with the driver, then once they stop, give them a thankyou thumbs-up or wave. So many instances where drivers just assume they can pull straight out, and acknowledging the fact they stopped (even though it is their obligation to do so) is a nice gesture that i hope will stick with them and make them think next time they come to a junction or roundabout.
I think actually that a lot of drivers who pull out of side roads in front of me are not expecting me to be traveling at 25mph - they see a cyclist and think I'm pootling along at <15mph and that they have more time than they do. Added to which, this is London and everyone pulls out in front of everyone.0 -

I dunno - would the car still have hit him if he'd followed the same route/speed - yes, the car driver obviously hadn't seen him.
Does he realise the car is approaching - that's more debatable - and we'd need the rider to confirm if he'd seen the car or not - but the fact that he didn't turn his head towards it suggests that perhaps he hadn't.
So the question then becomes - what would've happened if he'd seen the car approaching - anything? There are too many variables and not enough video evidence - but IME, if you notice a vehicle approaching a junction that should give way and doesn't appear to then you do modify your behaviour and you stand a greater chance of avoiding the collision - doesn't make it right for the car driver and doesn't guarentee lack of collision.
I hate "right of way" as it seems to imply that you have the right to carry on regardless (iirc, the highway code makes no mention of "right of way" only "give way") - I think it's safer to assume that unless you're the give way vehicle then you are "stand on" - ie you carry on unless it's apparent that the other chump isn't attempting to avoid you ....
Goes back to my old addage - assume everybody around you is a blithering idiot ....0 -
But to confirm, the driver was 100% at fault! Problem is there are so many idiot drivers that you have to expect this sort of thing, unfortunately.0

I agree, sort of.
The car is 100% at fault, but assuming he was wearing headphones there is the possibility the rider was distracted.
All this is assumption.
I'm not keen on the idea of headphones on a bike, easy distraction. Well it would be for me anyway.
I'm the sort of person who turns the car radio down or off when I get in busy traffic!0 -

Clear visibility, when the car was approaching the roundabout the cyclist was already heading for the exit, so he couldn't mistake his intentions. Simple case of poor / no observation on behalf of the driver.0 -

Ribble Stealth/SRAM Force
2007 Specialized Allez (Double) FCN - 30 -
Not sure whether I like that or not.
Looked a bit risky on occasions, plenty of undertaking, one red light jumped and a whole lot of risks taken.
Skilful riding, but a few too many buttock clenching moments for me there.0 -
Too much RLJing and Amber gambling for my liking too!0

Came across this in a link from a link in the embankment-end-of-era thread:

That's just stupid.
I'm surprised he hung around though, I'd have just left them to it.0 -
