i am not exactly a beginner but this is the first time i have bought bib shorts. I have a pair of Funkier shorts but needed a new pair so i bought a pair of Castelli bib shorts ,now my question is they seem to fit ok but most of the pad isnt in the position it should be .I think that the pad is too far back and will not be in contact with the saddle , does this suggest the shorts are too small .

No, it suggests that the pad is in the wrong place. How do they feel when you're in the drops?

Thats something i haven't tried , i Will try that and get back on here. But what would cause the pad to be in the wrong place ? Thanks for your reply .

Either the pad is positioned wrongly for you or more likley you have bought the wrong size shorts.

Shorts should be a very snug fit, and don't be alarmed if they feel uncomfortable when you're stood up. Good quality shorts aren't designed to be work stood up – they're designed to be worn in the riding position. So make sure they fit right in this position.

Shorts that don't fit correctly can cause saddle sores.

    Castelli size up very small.....
Not for me.. large is large on say the newer Volo for me and they are 100% ok
... its the DHBs I bought for last winter that are causing issues... their large when actually need a medium to stop excess material around the pad causing chafing. You dont realise any problem until about 30 mile into a ride with new kit.

Thanks for your replies i have tried them on again ,moved the pad about and it does seem to be in the right place ,however there isnt alot of room down there and its quite restrictive . I have measured the pad against my Funkier shorts and it is much smaller ,i think i may get a refund and buy another pair of Funkier shorts as i am not sure how much bigger the next size of Castellis would be.

I'd be amazed if the pad is in the wrong place for you. Unless you have them on back to front or something ?

Castelli came up very small for me - but the pad was still in the right place.

    No need to boast ...

I've been using some basic Mavic bib shorts for ages with no problems. They feel comfortable both standing and in riding position. Recently I bought a couple of better quality bibs (Santini and Milltag) - they felt less comfortable when standing, and it felt like the pad was in the wrong place, but they are much more comfortable than the Mavics when riding.
