Planet X Rollers

I'm planning a bit in advance here, but I'm looking at some sort of indoor training method to keep me ticking over in the winter when my outside training plummets off a cliff.
My requirements are:
-Offers some capacity for training (i.e. I ruled out non-resistance Tacx ANtares rollers which supposedly spin out before any real resistance builds up)
-Very non-disruptive. I live in a flat with a flatmate so I've ruled out noisy turbo trainers
-Lower end of the market. I'm envisaging a handful of hours per week over winter when the weather is too grim to sensibly go out
I've done some research on Google and this forum, and I've come across the Planet X resist rollers. From what I gather, they are essentially rebranded Sport Catchers rollers, which they also sell, and these in turn are what CycleOps rollers are based on.
Anyway, the Planet X ones some to fit the bill in terms of requirements and price - am I missing anything? Do these get discounted in the sales with any regularity or is £150 at the moment a good price? I'd also be open to 2nd hand.

Just watch you dont fly off them into your flat mate
Takes more getting used to but there are many other benefits : http://tidd.ly/968f90d90 -
Well I've yet to find a single negative review about them so far in all my research so they are sounding better and better.
I'm getting mixed opinions, though, with regards to whether or not you need to change tyres to prevent wearing out your good ones?Specialized Allez 2010

Think rollers (especially metallic tube rollers like the Planet X ones) are pretty easy going on tyres. It's turbo trainers that kill your tyre's.0

Things just keep getting better... I'll give it a few weeks to see if they do any impressive sale on trainers but I think I'm now sold. No rush though, the weather is lovely at the moment!Specialized Allez 2010

Completely off topic but what are these links to obvious places you keep putting in? Do you get a referral fee or something? Clogging the board up really (which I suppose this is...) for no benefit.0 -

Huh? That's a link to the P-X website talking about TTs vs Rollers?0 -

It shows as referral in the address bar so must be click baiting

The OP has seen the rollers and is asking about them so the link to them doesn't add much. There was a post about cheap commuters yesterday I think it was where he copied a link that was already in the post above, just now with an affiliate link. Sorry I could be completely in the wrong on this just looks a bit dodgy.0 -
I believe it's heat that causes tyre wear on turbo trainers. I've used rollers for 90 minutes and the tyres are only slightly warm to the touch so I wouldn't expect any wear.
That's the big advantage of rollers for me, you can just stick the bike straight on them without any prep.0 -
Sorry just noticed that. Directing it through his website...cheeky sod0

I would be interested to hear from the OP or anyone else who actually uses these rollers as they look like what I had been looking for for a good while but failed to come up with anything before I bought my Tacx Galaxia.
Particularly interested in how they compare noise wise to the likes of plastic rollers, the ones I have aren't crazily noisy, but they are far from being silent either.
I'm now wondering if I should get some of these and sell my Galaxia!
I had been thinking of getting a smart turbo for the winter, but the large expense and hassle of setting up means I'm having second thoughts.0 -
So I bought a set because I didn't want to wait any longer...
First impressions are good, I used them for the first time yesterday for about 15 minutes just to get the hang of it. Today, I used them for a 30 minute recovery ride and it felt good. 39x21 at ~100rpm was good for zone 1 for heart rate. Changing into the 53 ring and the harder end of the cassette rapidly pushed the heart rate up - there's no doubt that there is enough resistance for a very thorough work out indeed. There is an inbuilt magnet in the drum which gets harder the faster you pedal. It feels quite 'normal' when pedalling compared to cycling on the road.
Noise-wise, if I'm in the bedroom with the door shut, they are relatively sociable. You wouldn't particularly want to sit in the same room as someone spinning away, though. Of course, I have no comparison to other/plastic rollers, nor ones without inbuilt resistance. I would rate the noise-level as acceptable for use in the flat.
Overall, they get my official seal of approval.Specialized Allez 2010

What about these

I don't want to spend much more unless I have to.0 -
When I had some spare cash a few years ago I bought these rollers. Heavy, non-collapsible, but dead easy
to ride on, with a more road-like feel.0 -

Are they these ones? http://www.wiggle.co.uk/elite-e-motion-rollers/ £680! Hardly in the same area as the PlanetX at £150.0 -
Elite were give permission by InsideRide to manufacture them in Europe. As I said, when I had some spare
cash, I bought the InsideRide ones.0 -

Sounds pretty good. I might consider a set of those instead of the turbo I was thinking of. Although replacing one set of rollers for another set might be a difficult 'sell' at home :?0
