How much do you value your bike?

Bit of a strange question, but over the past few weeks I have had a few people paying extra attention to my bike.
Then was ultimately landed with the question of how much is it worth or how much did it cost.
Maybe I am being judgmental but they looked out of place and one of them was on a specialized and it just looked wrong. So I questioned him why he wanted to know how much my bike was worth, usual response "i'm interested in bikes", sorry but if you have an interest in them you know how much they are worth.
So my question is, if you are faced with someone asking the value of your bike. What do you say? Over value, under value or do one before I break your legs.

It's a weird one, some bikes just look expensive, thick frames, covered in designer branding, so it could be a genuine question.
I've had pikey types ask me about my £250 carrera, probably because the shwabe branding on the tyres makes it look interesting lol!
I guess you need to guage whether they are casing it out or are genuinely curious, but as you say, anyone who you don't have a passing relationship with, it's a strange question to ask, if they knew anything then they'd have an idea as to what it's worth.0 -

My exact point and my dealings seem to have been with pikey type people asking the value, everything just screams wrong about it. I can't have been the only person asked this so just interested in if it's happened to you before what did you say?
I undervalued mine and make sure they seen me pulling out a bright orange kryponite.0 -
I'd probably reply in the same manner as you would the weird guy in the pub who latches on to you, be vague, lock it good, and tell them it was a decent bike but the suspension is knackered and it's a POS, and move on.
A normal honest question would be more along the lines of component specific stuff.
No one walks up to you in a petrol station and asks you how much your (insert car model) costs.0 -

If I give them the RRP of all the parts, like I have for the insurance people, then it's a big figure! In reality is worth less than a third of that on the second hand market.0

Agreed most bikes can be big figures, but if you have someone approaching you who looks well pikey and starts asking how much is it worth, what do you say?0 -
If they are dodgy I ride off lol, but usually a quick I don't know as bought all the parts second hand cheap. To my mates, £3500 ;-)0

Never tell anyone who looks dodgy what your bike is worth - not like you'd ever tell some guy on the street about your Rolex or your wife's 5k engagement ring so why would you tell someone about your five grand bike if you didn't know them or they weren't obviously an enthusiast.
The Sea 2 Sky highway is a mecca for bike thieves which always peaks around Crankworx with people following riders home, watching good neighbourhoods and trawling strava for hot spots. I would not want to wish to the risk by telling people on sh*t box rides the cost of mine.Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0 -
I always say, I don't know, it was a gift from my wife (I'd wish)0
-
I usually just say "oh, not a lot really". If they're dodgy looking and they're asking, they already know your bike was expensive. Sometimes they're legit just interested, but still, it's not a question I'm particularly comfortable with from somebody I don't know or isn't obviously a mountain biker themselves.0

I'd think there was something odd, kids might say it but an adult? Probably not.
Mates chatting and asking "so what did you give for it" is different.Advocate of disc brakes.0 -
If you have any doubt take care.
Without being paranoid about it take a different route home, maybe stopping and checking your tyres along the way to make sure you are not being followed.
Sounds a bit silly but doing this has helped me a couple of times, all be it that one occasion was when I'd had a shout up with a bloke who ran me off the road.0 -
Yeah I know it's a strange one, but been asked a few times now by random people who look like they are scouting just never know what to say, always ends in "oh not much" and one person calling me a liar saying he knew it was expensive (felt like saying why the F* did you ask then).
But yeah it just feels wrong and uncomfortable.0 -
ive never been asked by a stranger but people at work see me tinkering with my bike and are interested. im pretty honest about it and literally everyone then says something about it not having an engine.0

Yes I get it! Just didn't want to comment on it.0 -
Telling work colleagues and people you know/sort of know is ok. But complete strangers is just wrong, a few times I have had this now. Maybe a sarcastic answer is in need.....it cost nothing, just had to trade in my car for it. I don't know but something like that.0

I find its best to say "its worth a million smiles to me" Rather than put a monetry value on it. any self respecting bike enthusiast would smile and agree.0
-
From an economic sense I would estimate its value as the accounting cost plus the value of the pleasure it gives me. When I am on my bike - which is often I love every second of it and that is the true value to me....take your pickelf on your holibobs....
jeez :roll:0 -

Not that i'd even think to talk to someone that a) doesn't have a respectable mountain bike in their hands or b) looks remotely dodge or sketchy in anyway, but if this person was to ask "whats your bike worth?" i'd naturally respond "the same as your teeth".It matters not, win or lose, it's how you ride the bike0

I saw a bloke locking up an expensive bike in Kingston and was going to comment that I wouldn't leave it there. Decided against it as it would sound dodgy, also if it walked I might look guilty.0

You'll look even more guilty if it gets knicked and you decide you should have mentioned it after all!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
