Setting up Derailleurs

Evening all,
I've recently purchased my first road bike, a Giant Defy 4 and I can't wait to get out on it when my shoes and lovely Lycra turn up.
This evening a friend of mine brought his turbo trainer up to the house so I could set my saddle height etc.
All good, apart from I can't seem to find a front derailleur position where it does not foul the chain in either the 11 or 32 rear cassette gear. At the moment I'm adjusting the high and low adjusts on the front. What else should I be looking at? If I set it for one, it's then out at the other end.
As you can tell I'm a total newby to this, but would rather learn than take it back to the shop.
Any help would be great

Is it OK on 32R and small front chain-ring but rubs on 11R/small front ring ?
Is if OK on 11R and large front chain-ring but rubs on 32R/large front ring?
That would be normal as you shouldn't really cross small/small or large/large.
If its rubbing under normal usage you'll need to reset the front mech.

If you've just bought it new it should have been set up before it left the shop!0 -

Yes, I can get it to run ok on the 32 and small front, then 11 at the back and big at the front so that sounds ok. I'm going to call the shop first thing tomorrow as I agree it shouldn be set up, but go to know the issue if they try to pull the wool over my eyes.
Cheers for the advise0 -

Why do you need to call the shop if it's working as it should? Big x big will equal front derailleur rub. Small x small will equal front derailleur rub. Unless your running SRAM Yaw you will get chain rub with the chain running at extreme angles even with trimming.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0 -

I realised this when in bed last night, so don't worry I've not called the bike shop.0 -

I was going to reply the same, but came to the conclusion that you were making a joke.
So why shouldn't you run small to small or large to large? In those combinations you will actually be stressing the chain, causing links to loosen. This will increase the likelihood of chains snapping and will reduce the crispness of gear changes. If your chain is on the short side, in the large to large combination, it could result in the rear derailleur being twisted into the spokes of your rear wheel. To err is human, but to make a real balls up takes a super computer.0
