You are me! Same age. Same bike. My first road bike as well.Got mine 3 weeks ago.
About to do my first 100 miler tomorrow after building up every weekend. The bike is very comfortable for long days in the saddle.
Currently riding with MTB spds Shimano XT 780 pedals and Shimano XC61 shoes. I've been mountain biking for years so it was the obvious call even though I've never ridden clipped in off road.0 -

I would recommend MTB SPD pedals rather than road pedals. Much easier to clip into as double-sided - no need to look down or struggle to clip in, when in traffic or on a hill etc. Also MTB/touring SPD shoes are easy to walk in when off the bike.
I have these on my road bikes and I find them really good:

+1 on the MTB pedals over road pedals. I just don't like walking like a drunk duck whenever I'm off the bike.
I've been running egg beaters for a while now and they work great. Easy to clip-in from any angle and I love the looks.
However, if this is the first time you ride with clipless pedals, consider a dual-service pedal to have the option of not clipping-in while you get used to it. Something like the shimano 530.0
