What do most people do for bike insurance? Is it normal to add it to the house policy, or is specialist insurance better? Thanks

I would be interested in the answer too as I have a lot of money invested in my bike now.

My main concern is if the bike should be stolen from the house that the insurance company would always find a means to say my security was not up to scratch.

To the main question I would generally prefer to have it seperate as bike insurance is quite specific, and I tend to change house insurance company every year.

Adding it to house insurance is a lot cheaper. I've just changed to this lot and reviews seem good (house insurance aimed directly at cyclists - underwriter is AXA):

Both my bikes are non specific items upto the value of £2500 and are insured for theft whilst "out and about" but I'm not sure how that would work and I don't really fancy finding out.

I've just taken a new policy with PedalCover which covers all your bikes and Home & Contents. It also covers you for racing and sportives at home and abroad.

Pricing was good compared with my previous home + designated bikes policy

Useful to know - my bikes are £2k and £5k, and I needed an expensive "premium" house policy to cover them - Sterling Insurance at £466 for contents only. Buildings I have separately so total around £700 all in.

The pedalcover policy will allow bikes up to £10k each as unnamed items.

What about where your bike is literally a collection of random parts and not 'off the peg'?

As my Heckler is, a one off build by me.

I'd suggest compiling an excel sheet of components and their RRP along with reciepts if you have them.

Supplement that with a photo if you're able.

It was the same for me, a diy build. They said note and photo the details. Maybe get a bike shop to inventory it.

I have (unfortunately) just had to make a claim for my pride and joy fully custom PX N2A.

Insured as a specific item on the house policy, which also covered out and about. The insurance company have been great and looking at giving me a cash settlement as the bike wasn't off he peg (and not easily replaceable).
I had photos and receipts, but they didn't ask for either.. although when they wanted to show a photo of the bike, my actual bike photo as still on the google cache for my bike on the Your Bike Bikeradar forum.

    Hope this helps
