Hey There,

Building up an audax style, four season/light tourer and am in need of a seatpost. It'll be going on a Van Nicholas Ti frame.

Comfort and price are the priorities, and i'm not sure wether to just go with a cheap alu seatpost, or a lower end carbon seatpost. I've always had carbon posts, but can' quantify the comfort aspect.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Planet X have Thomson Elite posts for £40.
  • I was in your shoes with a Van Nicholas frame and went with the titanium collar and seatpost (both van nich).

Can be picked up on ebay if you are lucky for a reasonable price.
  • Planet X have Thomson Elite posts for £40.

I did actually look at that, but was put off a little by comments on the strength and stiffness being high. Looking for a bit of comfort, but I don't know if I'd notice the difference.

I've seen some cheap titanium ones on ebay from Taiwan, but am dubious. Am I right to be?

I like a strong seatpost as I cracked a carbon one and didn’t like the thought of what could of happened if it snapped while ridding. I have titanium rails in my saddle which flex nicely and give a bit of comfort. I wouldn’t personally use a carbon seatpost or stem as I believe a good aluminium is superior and safer.
  • I went for a Deda one in the end. Was £22 on wiggle and had a brushed aluminium finish, which will, hopefully match the ti frame.

Went for Alu in the end mainly because I'm tight! But I'm hoping that the ti frame will add the comfort. Really looking forward to getting this built up!

    Thanks All

I picked up an S works Pave Sl, (Zertz inserts) with both sets of Clamps for Carbon and Alloy seat rails off Flea Bay for £40

Its as light as most other posts and makes a big difference on Comfort (IMO). I would Imagine though running 25s or over on a Ti frame you could get away with sitting on a barb wire fence.
and you will probably notice more difference with you tyre pressures or tyre width.

Thanks for that, if that goes for around that I'm keen. I can always send the other post back.

I'll be running 25's I would run 28's but I think they'll not leave room for guards. I want this to be a super comfy all-weather, mile muncher!

No probs. Just note that this one only comes with the clamp for alloy railed saddles by the looks of it.

Carbon rails are wider. If you do go this route and have a carbon railed saddle. Let me know I ve got the clamp for a carbon saddle going spare, ( mines a Fizik with Kium / whatever that is). You can have it for postage cost.
  • Specialised CG-R on my audax bike. Nice and comfy. Needs a seatpost shim, unfortunately, as they only do it in 27.2mm.
They use their cars as shopping baskets; they use their cars as overcoats.

So after discovering the annoying creak on my bike was actually a cracked Carbon seatpost-it's time for a new one but not carbon.
Looking at the Thomson Elite either straight or setback, any good? Or anything else for around £50 I should be looking at.
