I am going to be commuting to my saturday job and also riding to college and would also like to mix in a few forest trails and possibly a few blue graded routes at trail centres and I think the perfect bike for this would be a cyclocross bike , i am looking to spend under £1000 as that is the maximum money i can realistically save from my job. What bikes would people reccomend, also is cyclocross racing possible on a singlespeed or would people reccomend getting a geared bike, thanks in advance.

Single speed will put you at a big disadvantage in a race, the rest is personal preference. For stuff like riding to college the risk of theft is going to be high for a bike worth anything.

I have a mates house opposite college where the bike can be kept during college so that shouldnt be a problem, but i would like to have a go at racing so would you reccomend going for a single chainring at the front or a double?
