Hello all,

As a relatively new cyclist I am after some advice on a new bike. I have a few in mind but open to other suggestions.

I have only been cycling a few years but each year I get more into it. I aim for 75 to 100 miles a week if possible and like to complete sportives. I purchased a Merida race lite 88 which got me into cycling and now looking to upgrade.

I am looking for a full carbon bike around the 8kg or under mark with a shimano 105 groupset and 30mm clinchers. Admittedly I like bikes that stand out aesthetic wise. I will be purchasing this on a cyclescheme with a £1000 voucher and then will pay the additional.

Below are a few I have been looking at with the best prices I can find at present:

Moda molto £1450
- Probably my favourite but hard to find reviews on this so not sure if to stick to a bigger name

Planet x rt-80 £1500
- Only hear good things about planet x but again not sure if to stick to a bigger name

Fuji transonic 2.3
- Loved the bike with the aero features but Evans refused to even try and help me upgrade the wheels

Giant defy advanced 2
- Just noticed this bike. Looks amazing. Not sure if the discs are a disadvantage. Seems slightly heavier then others

Many thanks in advance
Any further recommendations and/or advice on the above is appreciated.

  • If you want a lot of bike for your buck, I suggest looking at Canyon. For instance the Canyon Ultimate SL 7.0 is a full carbon bike with a 105 groupset, Mavic wheels, Fizik seat weighting in at 7.6kg. and all that for 1399pounds. Otherwise just look for sales one various online sites and you might find a great deal.

    Good luck with the hunt!

I'm not sure the cycle to work scheme voucher will work for Canyon but if they could accent the voucher I'll get an Ultimate CF SLX 8.0. For some reason it costs a lot more in the UK than in Asia.

Since you have a £1000 voucher, you could look at bikes from:
Ribble, like the Ribble Aero 883, Ribble HF83

    KTM, http://www.bikingdirect.co.uk/product/ktm-revelator-3300/

PlanetX if you don't like their house brand bikes they have Viner Mitus Comp Road Bike. Although, I would get a RT-90 FORCE 22 COMP EDITION or Planet x rt-80 £1500.

Dolan, DOLAN ARES SL CARBON ROAD BIKE, DOLAN TUONO SL CARBON ROAD BIKE

Don't discount the bikes from ChainReactionCycles too like the Cube Agree GTC Race Compact Road Bike 2015.

If the voucher could be accepted by bikes-discount.de there are a lot of decent bikes there too.

Lastly, why not look at the new range of Merida 2016 bikes which should be launched around Sept and if you are a bit patient, UCI will have their first disk race then too which means if you wanted a disk brake, you should be able to get something that's more standardized come Nov/Dec.

    Cheers

    Thanks for everyone's input.

Has anyone got any advice on the Moda Molto and/or the Giant Defy?

I have taken a liking to the Defy but seems over 9kg based on reviews

All the bikes you have chosen have very different geometries so at the end of the day the one that fits you the best is a greater consideration than the relative masses of the bikes. The Defy is a well designed bike which has been afforded various accolades. It doesn't not have the aggressive geometry of a race bike like a supersix evo, so it will suffer a little in comparison in terms of pure handling. However, for the average Joe who doesn't race and likes to ride sportives or sportive distances then it covers all bases very well. It also suits riders with longer legs and shorter torsos.

The defy, is an endurance bike and very comfortable however, it is heavy as you already know.

Personally, the prices of Giant seem rather high IMO. furthermore if you do race, the is a higher chance you might crash in which a crash replacement program is preferred.

If that is something you might need, Planetx, Canyon, Ktm seems to be working on something but it just says coming soon.

Merida has some great bikes coming soon in Sept and 2016 season
    http://www.merida.tw/bike.php?op=cat&cid=1

Rose has a great aero road bike too
    ROSE XEON CW-3000

If it was up to me, I'll go for 1 (Canyon if they accept the voucher), 2 (Planetx), 3 (Rose cos they do have a CRP too), or a KTM.

Otherwise I would wait till after Sept and get a bike with disk brakes lol!

The Canyon and the Rose are not available on the UK based cycle scheme. You refer to vfm, but the KTM you refer to has Tiagra at that price point- as a point of reference the cannondale supersix evo or even the Caad 10 can be bought for a similar price with a better group set, ref Triton cycle- supersix evo with SRAM Force.

Cannondale has a crash replacement program but little details.

I'm seriously contemplating one of the KTM Revelators at the moment - based on a test ride on a rather upgraded one at the weekend.

Reviews are great, and your £1500 budget would stretch to the 105'd, Aksium-shod, 3500, which is exactly the same as i'm looking at. I'll let you know a comparison (as good as a comparison can be when the KTM was carbon-rimmed and running SRAM Red) once i've had a test ride of a Kuota later.....
