New Crankset & BB Spindle length

The Truvativ Powerspline BB on my old GT Avalanche has died again and needs replacing. They appear to be made of cheese so rather than simply buying another I'm going to swap the whole crankset out for a Shimano Alivio M430. The website suggests using the ES25 BB with this crankset but that is only available in 118mm spindle length whereas the Powerspline was 113mm and I would need to upgrade to the ES51 BB to match this.

So are BBs frame specific (113mm in this case) or are they matched to the crankset (118mm for the M430)
