Buying Advice Needed. Newbie

I got in to riding last year mainly wanting to commute to work once/twice a week (20 mile trip)
Started to enjoy going on more rides now other then just the commute.
When i first got in to it i ended up getting a bike from halfords for £220 Carrera TDF Edition (reduced from 600 or so cant rmember) so to someone new to this it looked like great spec for the price for a beginner.
a year on i fancy maybe a better bike but to be honest no idea on specs/parts/bikes at all. its all foreign to me.
Any advice on what bike i could look at next?
Budget would be 300-550. Ive been looking on the forums for some time and have seen some websites keep cropping up which seem to have decent offers on bikes. Is there a best time to get discounted rates?

End of August/September when the next year models are announced. There can be discounted models available from previous years models if you trawl the internet/keep visiting the bike shops.
In your price range look for a bike with a higher quality aluminium frame and carbon forks, will most likely be 8 or 9sp, you might be lucky and bag a 10sp, however it will all depend on whether you can find a bike that is the correct size, don't be tempted to buy a bike that is to big for you. Are you selling the TDF to fund the new purchase?
Here are some examples:

Very shortly the sales start and if you hunt around there will be plenty of bargains. One thing to consider is an upgrade to the brakes as most sub £1000 road bikes have quite poor brakes. An upgrade to 105 or r650 brakes if long drop makes a big difference.0

Have to disagree, most sub £1000 bikes have more than adequate brakes and I'd put them at the bottom of the upgrade list.0 -
Unless there's something wrong with the Carrera TDF I'd just stick some good tyres on it and carry on riding it till stuff starts to wear out. And in the meantime continue to save and think about what kind of bike you want your next one to be. You'd get a better selection of bikes in the £7-800 range this time next year.0

Like I said, more than adequate. Obviously there are better brakes out there, but many brakes on sub £1000 bike work just fine.0 -
work just fine.
Until you try better brakes0
