Ok

finally got someone to look at my bike who knows what they are talking about

he took a look and the freewheel under the cassette (its grumbling like a good un) and said he could strip and re-lube it, by the time he's done it'll be £30, he suggested as this is my commuter bike, not to bother just to have it let down on the way to work one day.

Now here's the fun part for you lot

rear wheel only, its a 9 speed Specialized allez, 700c of course, I'm 16 stone (224lbs/102kg) atm

so looking at 32 spokers (or a known tough less spoked wheel)

And I have a 20% code for UK eBay tomorrow only ;) minimum spend £20, max discount £50

what shall I buy?

Try other hub configurations. What's your budget?

Is it not possible just to replace the freehub? Or are you saying you're breaking spokes and want a stronger wheel at the same time?

Admittedly with the OEM / unbranded hubs the big manufacturers use it can be difficult finding the correct freehub.

Is it grumbling only when freewheeling? If all the time then it may be the hub bearings and not the freehub. If it's the freehub bearing, some of them are replaceable cartridge types.

bearings are fine, guy I saw works on bikes pretty much full time, he could not recognise the freehub/hub make.

    only grumbles when freewheeling

30 pounds to strip a freehub and re-lube is a bit rich, no?

They are OK solid a bit heavy but will work. should be 32 spoke three cross laced may need a little truing when you get them but hub servicing is very easy

Have ordered a whole new wheel

Mavic open sport, 32h on a tigara hub

Also ordered a chain whip and cassette tool

May as well start rebuilding my bike specific tools again

I can see where I'm going, the bike will end up being a 105/tigara mix

new wheel is in all is well

well...........mmmmmm, does not sound like there is much grease in the brand new tiagra hub :/

It rolls very well, but could be quieter

time to get some grease and do it my self.

Do you mean that it makes a loud clicking?
There are whole threads about whether this is desirable or not. Some hubs are much noisier than others and some people like it, I don't think it is necessarily a problem.

    wheel bearings redone by me

there was naff all in there, looks like the bearings had one side dipped in grease and stuck to races and then assembled.

now the jobs a good un, well packed and..............it still grumbles a bit, this wheels going back, something is amiss.

Worth inspecting the balls themselves, I've had Tiagra hubs new with damaged balls in them before now.
