Wanted to run this past a few people and to see what others would have done.
Out on a longish ride this morning and in front of me I saw someone in a full local team kit (Lets call them Becontree CC for ease). I knew I was catching him and would soon be going to overtake him. I didn't want to try and zoom past him so as we went into Fen Lane Bulphan I decided to ease past him. I said morning and he blanked me? But i carried on as its a straight fairly quick 2 mile road. About 10 seconds later he was out of the saddle and pulled directly in front of me with a "show of strength". This has never happened to me before so didn't know what the etiquette was. I was immediately on his rear wheel as he went hell for leather to distance me. I could have overtaken and wanted to help him but he didn't seem to be interested. He stayed on my route for about 4 miles and I stayed right behind him at my normal speed. He turned to go up Church Hill but before the climb stopped to "check his phone". I thought it was hilarious and enjoyed the tow but if I see him again I will ensure he is blowing out of his backside a bit quicker. Moral of the story…..only overtake someone if you know you won't embarrass yourself.
On another note, I had my first ride after being on gatorskins for years on my new Grand Prix 4000 ii tyres. The jump from 23mm to 25mm was very noticeable and made the ride more comfortable.

Unfortunately it is very common. Standard practice for many clubs. Which is why some people want no part of them ...........Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

When I'm out doing intervals I can look like a twit to casual cyclists. The same for hill reps when I slowly pootle around at the bottom waiting for the next round of pain. It's possible this guy was actually training and being strict. A lot of people get the red mist when they see another cyclist and want to over take them.
It could be any number of things. The important thing is who cares? I get my competitive side out when I race, maybe people who never race still have all this bottled up ego that they need to get out on the road!0 -
You saw a becontree member? That's rarer than a leprechaun, you should feel honoured!0

Yep, it's frustrating when you get overtaken by someone who then slows down, meaning you have to reduce your speed to stay behind them (speaking as a cyclist and a driver here). Most of my riding is done with setting new PBs in mind, so I'd much rather be towing a wheelsucker than be one - regardless of whether drafting him actually speeds me up or slows me down - so I can more accurately gauge progress.Job: Job, n,. A frustratingly long period of time separating two shorter than usual training rides0 -

I was out doing intervals once and another cyclist came out of a junction right behind me, the next 10 minutes was basically me accelerating away from him for 15 seconds and then slowing down until the next interval which was exactly when he caught up, I must have looked like a right idiot but the fact is I was doing my own thing
I have a strict rule that I never let anyone else dictate my pace, so if someone overtakes me I just ignore it and concentrate on my own ride, you can ruin a ride trying to keep up with someone who's clearly faster than you
plus with one cyclist passing another it's pointless as you never know if it's a level playing field, I've been passed by some right smug gits when I'm 95km into a 100km ride, but they might be only 10km in and still fresh, or they might have done 130km in which case they deserve to be smug0 -

I very often catch and pass people on long descents. It makes me very sad when they come past me about 50 yards up the slightest incline though. #fatladattheback0

I'm slower than average, so I often get overtaken, which is fine. However, I'm trying to improve, so mostly I'm going about as fast as I can. So it's a right PITA when someone overtakes but then slots in just in front - close enough for me to be in the draft straight away.
Quite often it means that I can keep up easily with less effort than before, which isn't what I want. So I'm forced to slow down in order to get out of the draft, since it probably won't be feasible to pull ahead and then stay ahead back in the wind.
Occasionally it's no big deal, but most of my riding is in Richmond Park at the moment, so when it happens frequently it's a nuisance and buggers up the rhythm of the ride somewhat.
Yes I know I should MTFU and pedal harder, but that's sometimes easier said than done.Is the gorilla tired yet?0 -
I'm always being overtaken, usually by people who continue to disappear into the distance. I say hello as they pass, and generally get a hello in return. Occasionally we'll have time to discuss the weather. But usually there's no danger of me catching them up and certainly not overtaking them.
Although a couple of weeks ago I found a string of numbered cyclists joining my route. A couple of them drafted me for a while, and when they inevitably overtook, I stuck with them for a few miles at a brisk, for me anyway, 18mph. We did overtake a few other riders who appeared to be part of the same event. Nobody seemed very chatty though, so I'm thinking they were doing a much longer ride than me, and I'm not convinced they were enjoying it...
I think if I ever come across another rider who keeps overtaking then slowing down, I'd just stop for a few minutes, have a pee, maybe a snack and a drink, admire the view. If they are still there after that, at least I'd know I was dealing with a stalker / serial killer.0 -

There a club round here that dont take well to being over taken nor very sociable. I've come to the conclusion their either zombies or that worn out from the riding that they have developed tunnel vision.
As for when they have to re over take you for the show of strength, just carry on and the catch them further up the climb at your normal pace when they blow their legs, they will get swallowed up by their group and look more of a fool to them anyway.0
