Seatpost quick release with shim?

Greetings everyone! First post!

Anyway, I have an Orange Clockwork, which I've been using with a USE suspension seatpost that requires a shim. I've just swapped over to a quick release clamp, and dropping the post is ok, but I can't work out a way to raise the post, while on the trail, and have the shim stay down. Any ideas?

Are you saying that the shim comes out when you pull the post up?
Shims I have used have a lip on the top that is trapped between the top of the seat post tube and the underside of the clamp. This holds it in place as you pull up the post.
I have a Hope clamp, and Use shim and Use SX post.

I'm using the same combo. But how can you have the lip below the clamp? Then the clamp won't be clamping the seat tube.

Did you use grease between the seat post tube and the shim?
Only use it between the shim and the seat post.

I've had shims on 3 or 4 frames this way with no problem!

    I'll do that.

Would you mind posting an image so I can see how you have yours configured?

My USE thermoplastic shim used to grip the seatpost and not stay in the frame (lip on clamp not big enough to stop it) I opened the clamp up with a table knife and poured boiling water over it so it took a set with a gap, now it grips the frame and not the post, sorted.

OK, I managed to put the shim in the first, and then the clamp on top of that, but when I try to pull the post up it keeps bringing the clamp and shim with it, even if I try to hold them in.

    I guess that's something I could try.

Unless you are just commuting suspension seatposts are rubbish. Get one the right size.

Even for commuting they are rubbish, chap at work had one, after 4 months it had collapsed so it was solid.

I have got one the right size - I still have the post that came with the bike - but the suspension seatpost takes the kick out of rough ground on a hardtail, and USE is a quality brand, and the post itself has good reviews. I've been using it for years (although I have had a few years break where I didn't use my bike).

I've had my Use SX probably for 15 years. Wouldn't be without it. It's just that they are not fashionable on off road hardtails nowadays that people don't like them.

I'll guess I'll have to make a decision: which is more important to me, being able to raise and lower the seatpost or having a softer ride. :(

You could try the old handle bar grip thing of spraying with hairspray to glue it in. Worth a final shot.

Worth a shot I guess. But would it work on what I think is an aluminium shim? Also, I'm not sure it would be strong enough to resist the pull of the post, which is very tight, and if it was I worry I would struggle to get it out!
