Anyone using a Garmin Edge 1000

I'm interested in people's views on the new Garmin Edge 1000.

I currently use an Edge 800, which I have to plug into my PC to download rides to Strava. Having been away and not able to connect my 800 to a PC, I've been looking at possibilities of hooking it up to my ipad. In short this is a pain, and not sure to work. Yes, I know I could wait till the end of my holidays and download them all together but I like to get them done after each ride.

I've read reviews of the 810 and 1000, and downloading rides to Garmin connect and then Strava, I would like real users answers...is this easy to do and is the 1000 worth forking out for over what I have already.

Any views appreciated.

1000 is almost a year old now, hardly new!

The 25, 510, 520, 810 and 1000 can all do auto upload via your smartphone.

I went from 800 to 1000 for exactly the reason you outlined, I wanted to avoid taking the laptop to download courses, upload etc on trips. That plus the phone alerts coming up on screen was also an appeal.

Very pleased with the 1000, my worries on battery life have proved unfounded. It's a nice piece of kit and a good upgrade over the 800. Having said that I'd be balancing it hard against the 520 if I was making the same decision tomorrow, think I would probably go with the 1000 for the nav functionality but the 520 is a nice piece of kit.

I've wifi setup on mine, my rides are uploaded before I wheel the bike through the house. No fuss, no cables and once you pair the accounts, it's all automatic
And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made.

Returned to to road cycling in '13, previous "racing bike" was 31 years earlier as a kid! Started from scratch with everything - bike, clothes gear. Wasn't comfortable with the idea of using my phone to show my stats (battery life would take a hammering, and the phone might take a hammering too). Bought an Edge 810 and was really pleased with it. Used it through '13, and through '14 by which time the 1000 and been released. I was really keen to jump in on the 1000 - bigger screen and a few other minor nice-to-have-but-not-vital features, but like most Garmin products, early firmware caused most early adopters loads of headaches so I held off. After all, my 810 was reliable with no issues.
Finally bought the 1000 when I spotted it at a decent price £300, and handed the 810 to my son, who'd just taken up road cycling.
Was initially put-off by so many negative comments all over the web, forums etc. Further reading pointed to this being commonplace with garmin products - bugs in the firmware, slow fixes, but EVENTUALLY - perhaps a year after release to market - the product finally seems fit for purpose.
I have to say, my own Edge 1000 has been rock-solid, no glitches whatsoever and not one single issue amongst the many reported early after launch. Final tick in the box for this model was 3 weeks ago. I went on holiday to Mallorca, hired a bike for 4 days, took my shoes, helmet, clothes and my Garmin 1000. Selected the "find me a return route of "X" miles, picked one, hit start and off I went. Really pleased.
I bought mine just as the basic unit, didn't need the new cadence and speed sensors, I have the a Trek DuoTrap unit, but all is good.
My unit connects to my iPhone 6, auto-uploads after a ride either via the phone or via wifi at home if I prefer. Rides then automatically pulled-through to Strava.
Can fully recommend either the 810 (which now has most of the connected features of the 1000), or the 1000. Livetrack is very useful - I know many folks have mixed views about this "feature", preferring to remain out of sight from family/friends when out on the bike for a few hours, but I found it very useful when often out on solo training rides in Northumberland, for friends to know I was safe.
Great for sponsors friends and colleagues to follow my daily progress during 4 day London to Paris event I've now done in '13 & 14 for charity too - the reason I bought the bike and got into cycling again in the first place.....
  • Thanks for your comments guys, much appreciated. I have decided to buy the 1000, now just to get it past She Who Must Be Obeyed

Rose Bikes seem to be the cheapest paid about £315 for Bundle HR monitor and speed and cadence.

In the past I connected by 800 to my Galaxy S5 via a USB OTG cable and updated the files to Strava etc using an app called ST Uploader. This worked well.

Now I have passed on my 800 and use the 1000 via BT on the same phone.
  • Yep, paid about £290 new from German outfit on eBay for my base unit - and that was before the Euro took a hammering, so don't rely on the usual suspects. £400 in Evans I believe
Job: Job, n,. A frustratingly long period of time separating two shorter than usual training rides

Yup some good deals to be had from Germany at the moment for various things. Obviously it's not next day delivery.
