Garmin 810 - Water Damage?

Bought myself a Garmin 810 about a month ago, had the first "damp" ride yesterday. Appears water has gotten into the mini-USB port and not my computer cannot detect the device.

Is this a common issue? Bit disappointed as the seals on the ports couldn't even handle a bit of drizzle.

A stupid question, but were the seals fully closed? I'm ofted dubious about little bits of rubber becoming slack with time and use.

These units are IPX7 - that's submerged in a bucket of water for 30 minutes without damage.

The seals either weren't closed or are themselves damaged.

Try your airing cupboard for a few days......

Mine has done this several times, spray Brunox on the port.

  • The ports were closed. I actually bought one of the silicone cases hoping they'd cover the device fully, but found they left the ports un-covered, as they didn't look fantastic to me.

Happened to mine. I took it back and they exchanged.

Mine started doing this, and Google shows it to be a common fault that the PC stops recognising the device or the memory card as an external drive.

I fixed mine by unplugging the USB lead from the PC and then sliding the other end into and almost but not quite out of the Garmin's USB connector a few times, in a fashion that resembles anything else that might involve sliding something in & out without the end coming out completely. Do it gently, be careful not to force it to avoid catching the edges, and it should come back to life now that the contacts are clean.

The other issue I've noted is that they don't like long USB leads. Mine isn't recognised at all with a 1m lead, swap it for one about a foot long and bingo, it's back.

Edit - mine's an 800, but this worked for me.

I put my 800 through the washing machine a few weeks ago. Fired up straight away but wouldn't link to the Mac at first. Left it overnight and it was fine.

The ports can look covered when the seals aren't actually properly seated. You have to make sure the seal flaps are actually seated - there is a little ridge on the flaps that fits into a groove on the device. This ridge needs to be fully pressed into the groove.

I use my Garmin 800 on my racing kayak - it's been dunked a few times and survived OK. Stick in a bag in a warm place with some silica gel or take the case off and let it dry out.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
