Shimano Positron WTF !

Ok so my Dawes Windsor is now really starting to test my patience. I have already had to sort the front mech , buy a new seat clamp (the original seat had weird flat sheet metal rails), New Tyres & Tubes , replace the worn chain and freewheel, New Tektro under the tape brake levers with new ribbon bar tape.

I thought I was finally sorted and then the shifter broke off ! No probs I thought a cheap friction shifter will do the job however it was not until I went to fit it along with the shiny new cable housing /cable that I bought that I noticed that the rear mech was some odd ratchet thing (not the traditional spring arrangement), Turns out its a Shimano Positron and it uses this weird piano wire thing in place of a shifter cable to push/pull the mech into place.

Anyway I have just pulled the trigger on a new Shimano Tourney 6/7 speed mech (traditional fitting not direct bolt on job) so I am hoping that it will just work with my cheap Shimano friction shifter.

This Dawes 'bargain' is proving to be a absolute ba$t**d ! I have already spent more on parts than I paid for the bike in the first place !

I presume the Tourney rear mech and shimano friction shifter will work ?

This was an early indexed set up from Shimano.

I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Positron system must have been awesome in its day and I don't think it deserves the profanity.
We take indexed shifting for granted these days but it had to start somewhere.

    What happened to it?
Was it a technical failure or did it just quickly get superseded?
What were Campag doing regards indexed shifting at that time?
