So with the mountains finally getting underway from stage 10, who will eventually walk off with the polkadots?
“Highest level” passes: 25, 20, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 points respectively for first 10 riders to finish;
category 1 passes: 10,8,6,4,2,1 points respectively to the first 6 riders to finish
category 2 passes: 5,3,2,1 points respectively to the first 4 riders to finish;
category 3 passes or hills: 2, 1 points, respectively to the first 2 riders to finish;
category 4 passes: 1 point to the first rider to finish.
Points awarded are doubled for finishing on the 10th, 12th, 17th, 19th, and 20th stages
Financially, there are some decent rewards
25,000 € for the final winner, with 300 for each day wearing it, 800 for winning an HC, ther'e a total of 106,850€ in the pot.
We hit the mountains with MTN-Qhubeka's Tekkers in the jersey, to the delight of the whole of Eritrea, but with 4 points enough to hold it now things will change when even the tenth placed rider on stage 10's HC finish will take 4pts.
1. ERITEKLEHAIMANOT Daniel 219 MTN-QHUBEKA 4 pts
2. ESPRODRIGUEZ OLIVER Joachim 91 TEAM KATUSHA 2 pts
3. FRAVUILLERMOZ Alexis 19 AG2R LA MONDIALE 2 pts
4. SUISCHÄR Michael 67 BMC RACING TEAM 1 pts
5. FRASICARD Romain 127 TEAM EUROPCAR 1 pts
6. POLMAJKA Rafal 45 TINKOFF-SAXO 1 pts
7. BELDE GENDT Thomas 73 LOTTO-SOUDAL 1 pts
8. GBRFROOME Christopher 31 TEAM SKY 1 pts
9. IRLMARTIN Daniel 167 TEAM CANNONDALE-GARMIN 1 pts
Stage ten offers very little for riders in the break, three cat 4 climbs before the GC boys tear up the HC finish.
Stage 11 though would see a long range soloist staying away for the win pick up 52 points along the way, with three cat 3s, a cat4, a cat 1 and an HC on the route to Cauterets. This is the day any KOM contender will be looking at.
Stage 12 has two cat 1s and a cat 2 before the days HC finish.
In all likelihood, the final jersey will end up on a GC rider, but there may just be enough on offer for a brave breakaway to pinch it now and then.

Look at good climber who's lost a lot of time who isn't injured.
E.g. Pinot.
Pinot is probably the best bet outside the GC contenders, but with bonus seconds on offer the summit finishes are going to be hard fought. I'd put money on Quintana or Froome.Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -
Rodriguez surely has to be in with a shout. He won't be there for all of the stages, but could potentially win one or 2?0

As Majka showed last year though you need to win summit finishes and get points mid stage.
Throw someone like Rui Costa into the mix. Is Laurens Ten Dam injured or has he just been getting through each day, hence the lost time?0 -

Dislocated shoulder for the wookie. Not in a good way."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Rolland- because who doesn't want to see him go full measles?0

Are bonus seconds on offer? Thought they were for the first week only.0 -

According to the official rulebook, yes, bonus seconds for every stage except TTs.Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -
What would be more prestigious to a Frenchman on a French team; finishing top 10 overall or winning the polka dot jersey?
That's not a rhetorical question, I'm genuinely not sure which Pinot would prefer at the moment. He is definitely still in with a chance of top 10.
Rolland would be my guess. He's the kind of rider that is prepared to try and hoover up the points on a medium mountain stage but also is capable of finishing top 10 on a HC summit finish.
I'd like to see Simon Yates go for it but I don't think he's quite good enough yet. This is a quality field this year.0 -

...
I remember a french friend saying they loved Virenque for the solo mountain attacks and Polka dots rather than the high placings and two time on the podium. They said they preferred a mad charismatic polka dot winner than a cold machine GCer like Ullrich; but I believe given the choice they would have loved the maillot jaune
This year Pinot cannot realistically do the GC now - but not sure that Pinot fits the charismatic mould either though. But if he attacks on mountain top finishes and get polka dot the French will love it anyway0 -

Seems like there's a bit of a race on after all :-)
J-Rod and Bardet tied, Fuglsang only 4 points back. There are a bucket load of points on offer the next two stages, if the breaks continue to stay away then expect the winner to come from there - and even though there are double points for the MTF today it's only Cat 1, so that's 20pts. There are 25 on offer at the top of the Croix de Fer.Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -

With 25 points for the Croix de Fer and 50 for the winner on the Alpe, this is still very much anyone's to grab.Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -
It's interestingly poised. Froome likely to beat Bardet up AdH but unlikely to contest CdF. How big will the break be? Bardet's unlikely to be allowed to go in it as a top ten on GC. Could Quintana grab it all?
If the GC guys are contesting the stage win, then barring picking up points on the CdF Quintana would need to both win and have Froome beaten by another rider to take the spots. That's a big ask. I'd say Froome is more likely to take it than him.
J-Rod doesn't look like he's got the legs, Fuglsang will be back to shepherding Nibali, Pauwels would need to win from the break, Rolland also has a top 10 GC to keep him out of the break.
A Pinot and Pauwels combo might just be able to get away and stay away...Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -
Froome takes the dots, the first British winner since Robert Millar in 1984. Quite right, he was the best rider over the mountains over the course of the race, rather than the usual gimmicky suicidal break specialist that gets it.0
