Cheltenham to London

Hellow fellow cyclists. Haven't been here for ages, it all changed!
Anyway, I have a few days off, so I am planning a little cycle trip. My idea is to take the train to Cheltenham and then cycle from there back to London. I don't want to go via tha A40 - I want to discover the area. Always wanted to cycle in the Costwolds.
I am playing around with some routes on Google Maps. Has anybody done anything similar? Are there good places to stay that are not too expensive. I am aware that this trip will take place in August, so the accomodation might be a bit more expensive that usual, but I'm ok with Campsites.
