Dropper post for Trek x-caliber can you help?

Hi all I have a Trek x-caliber 8 2014 19.5” and I am sure lots of you know the small issue with the seat post that doesn’t go down very far. I am looking to buy a dropper post, as I think this will help, however how you decide on size? Also has anyone in the same situation here, what did you do?
