Singlespeed Help

Hi guys, looking for a bit of advice on singlespeeding my crappy carrera commuter bike. I am wondering if my current chainset will accept one large (outer) ring only? It has a standard suntour triple chainset on at the moment.
Also I was looking at the DMR singlespeed/tension device which comes with the spacers. I'd imagine that you can just remove the cassette and place the single ring on the back with a load of spacers.
Add in a new chain, remove the front/rear mech + shifters and then i'd be good to go?
Seems too simple, if you know of anything I've missed please let me know!

you can just use the chainset you have - use the outer or middle ring and position the sprocket with the spacers to give a good chain line.
work out which size sprocket to get based on a 72 inch gear (a good compromise).
e.g. for road bike 27" wheel 48T chainring with 18T sprocket x 27 inches = 72 inch gear0 -
Suntour make dozens of different cranksets, and you don't even say which Carrera, so no-one can tell what you have.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Subway LTD '13 and the cranks say 'SRSuntour XCT' can't find the exact spec listed online.

Did a similar thing with a triple crankset i bought for my ss beater build, just used the outer ring of the crankset in the outer position and spaced the cog on the singlespeed kit on the rear wheel for a good chain line. If you are buying a SS kit try and get one with as many little spacers as possible - will help you get the best chainlineFramebuilder

Rings should be removeable, easy check using a 5mm Allen key, then find and fit a single specific ring for better chain retention.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Done it (well bodged it). The rear wheel on the carrera didn't have a compatible freehub, so used the disc wheel from my old xc bike (meaning no back brake due to no disc mounts on the frame). Also couldn't remove the inner/middle chainring as they were the only thing to keep the outer ring attached. Seems to work okay mind, sure i'll have messed something up though!

nice one.
if you want to ditch the middle ring get some single chainring bolts
e.g.

(the bolts you have now require two chainrings in order to do up securely)0 -
Perfect - looks extremely undesirable so perfect for leaving out.Framebuilder

Cheers guys, might have to get some of those bolts, will make it even lighter with another chainring gone.
Glad it looks undesirable, will be left outside work (locked obviously) all day so hopefully nobody decides to nick it!0
