Hi Guys,

Looking for a bit of advice, I've decided to give road biking a go as my shoulder can no longer cope with MTB. I've got a small budget of around £500 as I don't want to spend a fortune in case I don't get on with it.

I was in my local decathlon the other day and came across the new Triban 520 for £450 http://www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-520-road-bike-sora-black-red-id_8322663.html
Really nice looking bike and decent components for the price. Is this as good as it gets at this price point?

There is also the 540 for £600 https://www.decathlon.co.uk/triban-540-road-bike-105-id_8331275.html
Would this be worth stretching the budget for the 105 and askium wheels?

Is there anything else in my budget I should be looking at?

Thanks, Jim

Don't know why no one has answered this Jim, I recently started on road bikes due to lack of decent off road where I am. Decathlon bikes are well regarded here in Road or MTB format. Good spec for the cash and a great starting point, either of the bikes you mentioned are great and would do you fine so the choice is your's really. Can't comment on Sora group but on mine I have 105 5700 and it's great, lovely and smooth shifting and braking even with the basic Tektro brakes, I'm sure Sora is pretty good also like most Shimano gear. I'd suggest maybe shopping around for end of line and sale items at the usual sites (Merlin, Chain Reaction, Wiggle, Planet X, etc.) within whichever budget you decide and see what compares so you can check value for money. Obviously then you'd have to size yourself though, have a look at Go Outdoors also:

No doubt someone will chime in now and say you need full carbon and dura-ace or you will suck but there's really no need at the moment. Get out there and enjoy it!

Probably because it gets asked about 20 times a week.
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles
